William McGilbert "Bill" Davenport IV Obituary1931 - 2009
William "Bill" McGilbert Davenport IV, 77, of Greenfield, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at his home.
He was born Nov. 29, 1931, in Darden, N.C., the son of William M. Davenport III and Minnie West Davenport. He married Ruth Koehne on Feb. 14, 1987, and she survives.
Bill was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Lee Davenport of Greenfield; two brothers, Lynnwood Davenport of Waverly and Bob Davenport of Greenfield; and a sister, Katie Davenport of Salt Lake City.
He is survived by five sons and three daughters, William M. Davenport V of Meredosia, Terry (wife, Mary) of Jacksonville, Ernest (partner, Pat Good) of Greenfield, Kathy "Kitten" (husband, Steve) Hardwick of Greenfield, Darrel (wife, Michelle) of Murrayville, Laura Martin of White Hall, Jennifer Martin (partner, Rick Castleberry) of Roodhouse and Ron (wife, Tamara) Martin of Bethany; 27 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren with three more on the way.
Mr. Davenport proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 23 years retiring in 1974. He was a Machinist Petty Officer First Class. After retiring from the military, he worked at Capitol Records in Jacksonville and Shupp Tool and Dye in Pontoon Beach. He retired in 1994.
Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. His hobbies included animal husbandry, gardening, carpentry, bee keeping and wood carving. Even though he completed three worldwide tours with the Navy, he truly enjoyed the simple things in life.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-8 p.m. at the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield, where funeral services will be at 10 am on Monday. Burial will follow at Witt Cemetery near Rockbridge.
