Melvyn Edward (Mel) Newhoff succumbed to complications of Parkinson's disease at the age of 72 in Moorpark, California on July 21, 2013. He is survived by his loving wife, Trisha, son David, two brothers and their spouses, three grandchildren, four nieces, and three great-nieces. Mel was a generous and caring human being who was loved and respected by all who knew him.
Mel was born to Norman and Daisy Newhoff in New York City and moved with his family to Encino, California when he was 11 years old. He performed admirably on both the football and swimming teams at Birmingham High School in the San Fernando Valley and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and marketing at the University of Southern California (USC).
After basic training in the California National Guard, Mel joined Chiat/Day Advertising, one of the most famous agencies in the country. An exceptional writer, Mel quickly rose to star status as Copy Chief. Later on, he teamed up with two other Chiat/Day alumni, Mel Abert and Tom Burr, to form Abert, Newhoff & Burr in Los Angeles. Producing one brilliant campaign after another, the agency became known as one of LA's hot advertising shops, and both Mels justifiably earned icon status in the industry. More recently, Mel continued to serve the needs of his grateful clients as principal of Strategic Marketing Partners until his untimely death. He will be sorely missed.
While expressions of sympathy are welcome, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to one of the following charities:
