Hall Call Number: R929.2 H178 JOHN COLLINS, Jr., son of John and Susanna Collins, was born in Boston in1644 and married MARY TROWBRIDGE. In 1663 he removed with his wife toMiddletown, Conn., and soon after to Saybrook, where he is recorded ashaving bought land there of William Lord in 1665. In 1668 he went toBranford, where his wife died the same year. The same year he united withthe church in Branford, or with what was left of it, for the greater partof the members had removed with their pastor to Newark, N. J., displeasedat the union under Winthrop's charter in 1665 of the New Haven Colonywith the Connecticut Colony, which permitted other than church members tobecome freemen. In October, 1669, he was propounded as freeman atGuilford, and February 20, 1671, was admitted as planter, and removedthere the same year. Hinman says that he was elected deputy in 1672. Byhis first wife he had two sons, John, born in 1665, who, July 23, 1691,married Anna Leete, daughter of John and granddaughter of Gov. WilliamLeete, born at Guilford, August 5, 1671, and died November 2, 1724; andRobert, the ancestor of our line, born 1667, who married Lois Burnet ofthe numerous and important family of the name in Southampton, L. I. Forhis second wife he married, June 2, 1669, Mary, daughter of John Stevensand widow of Henry Kingsworth, one of the first twenty-five settlers ofGuilford. By her he had a daughter, Mary, who, June 29, 1681, married Dr.Nathaniel Chapman of Saybrook, ancestor of Hon. Charles Chapman ofHartford. For his third wife he married, March 6, 1700, Dorcas, widow ofJohn Taintor of Branford, and daughter of Samuel Swain. He died atBranford in 1704. Guilford and Branford are both agricultural towns andadjoin each other, lying just east of New Haven on the shores of theSound. Mary, who married first Harry Kingsnoth, Esq.,3 of Wolvendon, co. Kent,and secondly, June 2, 1669, John Collins, of Guilford, Conn. She died1700, having by her second husband had issue; 1.
