[wmHarrell.FTW] 768. William Fletcher I, born Abt. 1646 in Accomack Co. Va.; diedDecember 5, 1710 in Accomack Co. Va.. He married 769. Elizabeth SelveyAbt. 1675. 769. Elizabeth Selvey, born Bef. 1680; died October 21, 1751 inAccomac, Va.. She was the daughter of 1538. Tobias Sellbie and 1539. AnnMorton. Notes for William Fletcher I: It is probable that William Fletcher arrived sometime in the 1660's towork in the shoe business, and the tradition was passed on to his son andgrandson, both of whom specified shoemaking tools in their wills. William Fletcher probably married Elizabeth Selvey in 1675. At any rateTobias Selvey, a surgeon, who had been granted 600 acres of land in 1666by patent, gave 150 acres to William and Elizabeth. This was the Fletcherhome farm, passed on to the first sons for 3 generations. In 1692, Selveygave 50 acres more in this area to his daughter Elizabeth, and in 1699she and William deeded this land to their second son Matthew. Old William died in 1710 and in his will he leaves the main farm to hisoldest son William, with various gifts of household equipment to othersof his nine children. The second son, Mathew, died in 1719. Apparently he never married, for heleaves his land and belongings to his brothers, sisters, nephews andneices. The fifty acres he leaves to his younger brother, Betterton, asrequired by his parents deed of gift. Betterton sold this land in 1736and was not heard of again. Matthew had also acquired an additional 150acres, presumably by sale, and this he left to his youngest brother,Brandon, who farmed it and raised a family. Matthew was also a shoemakerand left his leather and oil to William. The third son, Thomas, got a boat, compass, iron kettle and a gun fromhis father but no land. He bought land and prospered. When he died in1737 he left the land to his son Henry, but entailed it to his grandson,Thomas, providing that if Thomas died without heirs the land was torevert back to his older brother, William. Henry bought more land, built a house known as the Thomas Fletcher house, and became a Justice of the Peace who in 1774 joined with his fellows incommission to declare the Stamp Act imposed by the British ParlimentUnconstitutional. He died in 1799, leaving everything to his son, Thomas, who acquired more land, married Elizabeth Wallop, after whose familyWallop Island is named, and died intestate in 1820. The family of thisbranch continues in this northern part of Accomac, and their buryingground is to be found on the road from Grotons to Temperanceville, on thefarm of Jesse Mason.
