TOD: George Elias Webster Birth: Aug. 8, 1907 Fredericksburg Chickasaw County Iowa, USA Death: Mar. 31, 1988 Shell Rock Butler County Iowa, USA George E. "Cootie" Webster, 80, of 1202-4th Ave SW, Waverly, Iowa, died early Thursday morning, March 31, 1988, at the Shell Rock Care Center in Shell Rock where he had been a resident for 18 days. He was born on August 8, 1907, in Fredricksburg, Iowa, the son of Charles and Bertha Impson Webster. He moved with his parents to Waterloo at an early age where he attended grade school, and in 1918 moved with his family to Waverly where he graduated from the Waverly High School in 1926. George then clerked in the W. R. Leary Grocery Store, and on November 11, 1928, he was united in marriage to Lucinda Westendorf in Fayette, Iowa, by Rev. John D. Clinton. The couple made their home in Waverly where George continued working for W. R. Leary until January, 1930 when he became a Sub Carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Waverly. In 1933 he was promoted to Sub Clerk and in 1936 was promoted to Regular Clerk. In 1951 he became a Rural Mail Carrier, retiring on January 10, 1969. Following retirement from the Post Office, George worked in the Frozen Food Department of Freds Super Valu in Waverly for 5 years, and also did volunteer work at the Waverly Golf course. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling and was also an avid golfer. He was a member of Peace United church of Christ in Waverly and was very active in church work, was a member of the National Rural Mail Carriers Assn., and had been a member of the Waverly Volunteer Fire Dept. for 25 years. George was also very involved with sports, in his youth played baseball with the Waverly Baseball Team in the Cedar Baseball League, later umpiring for many area games, and became a N. E. Iowa Athletic Official. He is survived by his wife, Lucinda, a niece and nephew that were raised in the Webster home, Diane Westendorf of Iowa Falls, David Westendorf of Waterloo, and one sister, Mrs. Beulah Eggleston of Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Elwyn George Webster who died on June 13, 1974, and two brothers, Vernon and Lyle. Funeral services will be Monday, April 4, 11:00 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly with Rev. Richard S. Brueseke officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery Waverly. Friends may call after noon Friday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral home in Waverly. The family suggests that memorials be directed to either Peace United Church of Christ or to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Assn.
