Palmer's Addition to the town of Vinton; South Vinton; Sells' Addition to the town of Vinton; College Square; Hamilton Place; Martel's Addition to the town of Vinton, and New Vinton, in said county, would respectfully represent to your Honor that said villages lie adjacent to each other and in compact form, that neither of them has any municipal organization, and that it would be of great advantage to and for the interest of all concerned that they should be united and organized into a municipal incorporation, together with such lands adjacent as, by the consent of the proprietors thereof and the citizens of said villages, may be included; that, combined, they contain a population of more than one thousand permanent inhabitants. Therefore your petitioners respectfully ask your Honor to direct the question to be submitted to the legal voters of said villages whether they will have a city corporation or not. And the Court being fully satisfied that the villages in said petition mentioned contain a population of one thousand permanent inhabitants, and that said petition is signed by at least one-fourth of the legal voters of said villages, do order the prayer of said petitioners granted; and it is further ordered by the Court that the question be submitted to a vote of the qualified electors of said villages on the 14th day of March, 1857, between the hours of 9 o'clock A. Hill, The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, 1910. Samuel E. Keith … Mr. Keith was born in Huntingdon County Pennsylvania on March 28, 1828 and is the son of Jacob and Mary [McPherran] Keith. His father was born in 1775, died in 1848 and was interested in various mining and iron interests in the state [he was likely a forgeman at an iron mill]. An able businessman, he was still a Scotch gentleman of the old school, and was a worthy descendent of Lord George Keith, the polished and cultured founder of Aberdeen College. [This is puff.] The American ancestors of the Keith family were five brothers who emigrated from Scotland at an early day; were instrumental in founding the characteristic industries of Pennsylvania [they were farmer's and blacksmiths]. Samuel Keith, of this sketch, had resided in his native state for twenty seven years when he entered the period of his western life. [His biography didn't mention he was a school teacher and living with his brother-in-law during some of the years of this period.] On April 15th 1856 … he stopped in Iowa City Iowa which was then the terminus of Iowa's first railroad… The first three years of Mr. Keith's residence in Vinton were passed as a store clerk … he founded a general mercantile establishment as well as a furniture store and became one of the leading men of the locality. On October 1, 1857, Mr. Keith married Miss Adelia Beck…she died November 21, 1866, the mother of three daughters as follows; Missouri, whom died in infancy, and Cora and Mollie who reached womanhood and married. Cora became the wife of Thomas Pierce on August 31, 1882 and died February 19th 1885 leaving a daughter [actually, two daughters, Cora and Virginia] who now resides in Long Beach, California, wife of James Heartwell, a leading banker of that place. [Worked in bank after a period of being an engineer.] Mollie married George W. Farmer October 12, 1892 and resides Chicago where her husband is engaged in the erection of apartment buildings [after being a round house foreman on the railroad]. On February 24, 1869, Mr. Keith married Emma Whitlock…the two sons born to them were Karl who is a jeweler … in Eagle Grove Iowa, and Victor W. who is engaged in the newspaper business [as a writer] at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mrs. Emma [Whitlock] Keith died April 12 1879 and in February of 1883 Mr. Keith married Miss Mina [Maria] J. Briggs…Two children have been born to this third union as follows; Leo B. Keith , May 22, 1885, who is [a] cashier of the First National Bank of Colman, South Dakota [a bank Samuel owned] and married Mary Shreeves … April 16, 1908; and Genevieve Keith, born April 13, 1889 who was married October 20, 1909, to Dr. G. [George] E. Funston [a dentist] of Waterloo... Mr. Keith is the only survivor of nine children, the last one, a sister dying in 1909, aged ninety-one years. [Rebecca, married James McElroy] [This biography has key family information of Samuel but is not at all accurate related to his forebearers.] He Obituary published in Vinton, Benton, IA. Samuel E. Keith Called by Death Respected Pioneer of Vinton Answers the Final Call Early Yesterday Morning Samuel E. Keith passed away Thursday morning at eight o'clock, after an illness of six weeks at his home in this city. Death had seemed eminent for a week past and when the end came he was surrounded by the members of his family. Mr. Keith was a pioneer of this county, having come to Vinton in 1855. For awhile he clerked for W. B. Van Horn and later ran a mercantile business of his own. Afterward he entered land in Jackson township and went into the real estate business. He has been retired from active business for a good many years, his private affairs demanding a considerable part of his time. Mr. Keith was an active man up to a very recent date and his mind remained clear and bright up to the moment of his demise. He had reached the age of eighty-one years on the twenty-eighth of last March but was keenly interested in the questions of the day and in all that went on about him. He is survived by his wife, five children and one grand daughter. His children are Mrs. Mollie Farmer, Carl, Victor, Leo and Mrs. Genevieve Funston. The funeral will be conducted from the residence Saturday afternoon by Rev. P. M. Simms of the Presbyterian church, of which the deceased was a member, assisted by Rev. D. W. McLane, and the interment will be in the family plot in Evergreen cemetery.
