Helen Beatrice Waak was born January 20, 1910 in Bellville, the daughter of Herman and Bertha Grabow Waak. She died December 17, 2005 at the age of 95. Waak grew up and attended schools in Coshatte and Bellville. After graduating from Bellville High School in 1928 she attended the University of Texas where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1938. Helen was employed as a school teacher in the 1930s and worked for 10 years earning her degree during the summers. Her first teaching assignment was in Stratton Grove where she traveled to on horseback. She then taught in the Piney and Kenney schools. A member for 81 years with St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville, Helen also was a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed farming and ranching with her brother Ben most of her life. She was a member of the Coshatte Agricultural Society, Sons of Herman and the Bellville Garden club. She served as secretary and treasurer for the Coshatte Cemetery Association for 40 years and as secretary for the Coshatte-Piney American Cancer Society for more than 30 years. Waak is survived by her nephews: Calvin Waak and his wife, Ruby, of Bellville; Monroe Waak and his wife, Mary Jane, of Dallas; John Waak and his wife, JoAnne of Lufkin; Thomas Waak and his wife, Nancy of Forth Worth; and her nieces: Erlene Meinhart and her husband, Bobby of Bellville; and Jeanette Ueckert and her husband, Robert, of Bellville. Also surviving is her great-nephew: C.W. Waak and his wife, Gayle, of Bellville; niece-in-law: Patsy Engelking of Albuquerque, NM, and many other friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Bertha Waak; sister, Margaret Gretchen Engelking, and brothers, Walter, Hermann (Monty), Ben and Monroe Waak. Pallbearers were Tom Waak, Monroe Waak, Waak, Calvin Waak, C.W. Waak and Bob Meinhart with honorary pallbearers being Robert Ueckert and great nieces and nephews.
