In a phone conversation with Hosea & Maxine Ross of Bristol, Indiana, on 12/1/1997: Hosea's middle name was the name of a minister. Hosea Ballou Ross was the name of his father, too. Social security number was 336-32-6910. On the 1900 Illinois census he has older siblings John E., Winn S., Daisy P. and Origen C. Both of his parents were born in Illinois. He also had 2 brothers named James D. and Lyle S., both born in Illinois. Source - 1930 census. His 1st wife was Esther D. Source - 1920 Illinois census. His father was born in 1844 and died in 1928. His mother was born in 1848 and died in 1934. Source - Dorothy Marcussen Ross. Funeral expenses from Wilson Park Funeral Home for his father have a date of August 30, 1928. The date could be his death date, his burial date or simply the date on the paperwork. But I believe August to have been his month of death. Funeral expenses from Wilson Park for his mother is dated March 23 with no year. On August 19, 1903, at 2:00 p.m was the 4th Annual Commencement of graduating exercises for rural schools of Sangamon County. It was held at Chatterton's Opera House. Governor Yates delivered the address to the class. Among the students was Hosea B. Ross, Jr., of Rochester. Hosea also spoke/sang (???) "Perseverance is Surer than Swiftness. Ross of Rochester died at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1964, at Memorial Hospital, age 78. Survived by wife, Gertrude M.; three sons, Lyle S. Ross of Rochester, James D. Ross of Springfield and Hoea B. Ross of Bristol, Ind. and eight grandchildren. Remains are at the Wilson Park Funeral Home, Rochester, where friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday and until time of services there at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Rev. Erwin J. Pratt officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Buckhart. Rochester Lodge No. 635 will conduct services following the funeral. (Published Illinois State Journal January 15, 1964) Father's obituary: Buckhart, Aug. 30 - Hosea B. Ross, 84, of Buckhart, died at his home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Ross, who was one of the pioneer settlers of Buckhart, was well known and highly respected in this community. He was a retired farmer and extensive land owner. His death was due to complications. Mr. Ross is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. C. E. Fairchild, Origen C. Ross and Hosea B. Ross, jr. all of Rochester; John E. Ross, of Mechanicsburg, and Winn J. Ross of Berry. Thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive. The date of the funeral has not been set, but will be held from the residence of the decedent's son, Hosea B. Ross, jr. three miles east of Rochester. Interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery at Buckhart. (Published Illinois State Journal, 8/31/1928, page 10)
