Story by Henry Clinton Davis

Joseph Peeler Davis, Sr. was born on Oct 24, 1853 in Tennessee, and would meet and marry Mary Jane Hefner in Alabama on Feb 16, 1871. The young couple would have two children born in Alabama, their da ughter Sarah Ophelia (Pele) and John Newton. Charlie Clinton, Amanda Lucinda (Lucy), William Cullen (Boss) Davis and Cordelia, would be born after the family moved to Booneville, Arkansas. . The famil y would leave Booneville, Ark. and go by ox-caart and wagon following the old Texas Trail out of Fort smith down through the Indian Nations crossing the red river just north of Bonham, Texas and proce eding south to Ellis County, Texas where Joseph's brother, Henry, had proceeded him, and the last two sons, James Madison, and Joseph Peeler Jr. would be born in Ennis, Texas. Joseph and Mary Jane wou ld also adopt and rear a nephew by the name of Grover Davis. Grover never knew that he was anything other than a son until he was grown. He would nove to the Lawton, Okla. area and contact with his de scendents would also be lost.

Joseph Peeler Davis, Sr. would become the owner and operator of the cotton gin in Ennis. A man by the of Whatley would try to burn it down and Joe would attack him with a hatchet almost killing him. J oe escaped to the prairie and hid out for several weeks before he found out that old Whatley was going to survive, so he returned to Ennis giving himself up for trial. It took almost everything Joe ha d to defend himself, but eventually he was exonerated and was allowed to continue operating the gin for a while. When the cotton crops began to play out because of weavil infestation, and the cotton f armers pushed further on to the west, Joe decided to sell the gin and move the family to Indian Territory. There were 12 covered wagons that left Ennis in 1899. Joseph Peeler Davis was accompanied b y his married sons Charlie Clinton, William Cullen, married daughters Sarah Ophelia Davis-Turner, Amanda Lucinda Davis-Shivers, and the two younger sons still at home named James Madison and Joseph Pe eler Jr, Perry Southerd, Charles Ware, R. W. Shivers, and the seven Turner brothers named George, Charles, Chris, Jess, John, Lee, and Jim Turner would also have a wagon apiece and be a part of the wa gon train to Oklahoma.

Charlie Clinton Davis and Edna Ross Perry Davis would have their new born son Ray in March, 1899 just prior to their exodus in the fall of '99. The wagon train would make it into the Denison, Texas ar ea in late fall of 1899, and would cross the Red River by ferry about where the Lake Texoma Dam is presently located. An old one legged man by the name of "Bear" was operating the ferry for Mr. Colber t. Although Mr. Colbert had a bridge built, it was a toll bridge and it was much cheaper to use the ferry. The settlers would proceed east from there to the Liberty bottoms area just south of the comm unity of Kemp, where most of the land in that area was owned by the Duckworths, Beshears, and Connallys. Charlie Clinton would take his family and move a little farther north on the prairie to a plac e called "Old Joel's Post Office, which is located on present day highway 78, about one half mile east of the old Mike Well's place, and three and one half miles northeast of Kemp. It is here that Cha rlie and Edna's second son, William Ross Davis is born on Aug. 9, 1902. The rest of the family would be born after the family first moves to the Connelly township and school. George 1905, who would di e by accidental shooting at the age of 16, Johnny Merle (Dolly) 1909, Lucille 1913, would die in 1927 from sugar diabetes, Raymond Reed (Honey Boy) 1918, and Jimmy Earl 1921.

Joseph Peeler decided the country life in the Liberty bottoms was too confining and decided to move back to Denison, Texas and bought the "Last Chance Saloon" located on the Carpenter Bluff highway ea st of town on the south side of the road at the top of the Hill. He would later sell the tavern and buy into the Denison Hotel and would be working there at the time of his death Nov. 23, 1906. His wi fe Mary Jane would live for a while with Joseph P. Jr. and his wife Fanny in Okla. and then later move to Electra, Texas with Joseph Jr. and Fanny and would remain with them until her death Feb 15, 19 35. Joseph P. Sr. was buried in Ennis, Texas while his wife was buried in Electra, Texas.

Beschreibung
