ELIZABETH C. "LIZZY" (BURLINGAME) MELCHER - HULTQUIST Elizabeth, known as Lizzy, was the daughter of Margaret (Flitch) and James Burlingame. She was born in Iowa, and that is where she also married her first husband; William J Melcher abt 1885. To this union was born one son; Lee William Melcher (sometimes recorded as Lee Roy William Melcher). According to records, husband William was born in Germany in 1858 and died when their son was about two years old on 12 Jan 1890 in Big Bend Country, Washington and he is buried in Forest Home Cemetery; Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. After William's death, Lizzy is found living in Washington, Iowa in the 1895 census. Then in 1897, Lizzy was married to widower, Charles Hultquist of New Boston, IL. They were married on May 19, in Rock Island County, IL. His first wife, Anna had died in 1896. There were no children born to this marriage but Charles and Anna had four grown daughters, the youngest, Ellen had just passed away in March. Lizzy and Charles resided in New Boston after their marriage. Other Household Members beside Lizzy & Charles were her son; Lee W Melcher age 12, student and her father James Burlingame age 66, Occupation: Day Laborer. 1910 & 1920 Lizzy and Charles are found living by themselves in New Boston. Her son Lee has married and moved away and her father has passed away. The 1930 census lists Lizzy still living in New Boston, but she is now widowed. She dies just a year later and is buried in Iowa with her first husband under the name Elizabeth Melcher. Her death record wrongly lists her burial place as New Boston, IL. Thomas, 4/23/2017 It took me a while, but I found Elizabeth in the original burial book that's been in use since the cemetery opened in 1856 or 1857. It took longer than it should have because her FindAGrave memorial listed the date of death as May 6, 1931 when it was March 6. That record shows her in Block 3 Lot 40 Space W-4. In the old part of the cemetery the lots appear to have 8 burial spaces, 4 on the east side of the lot and 4 on the west side. They are numbered down each side from N to S. I believe, but haven't been over to Forest Home to confirm, that grave markers in the old part are oriented to face east. In newer parts of the cemetery, they face various directions. I've attached an image from the original burial record book.
