OBITUARY
Mary Theresa Bertelsmeier was born in Temora on the 9th April 1916. She was the fourth child and only daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Bertelsmeier and his wife Mathilda “Tilly” Theresa (nee Block).
Mary was baptized by Pastor Fiedler at St John’s Church, Temora West, on May 7th 1916. She attended Sunday school there. Mary was confirmed by Pastor J E Materne on 31st August 1930.
Mary attended the one teacher school at Glynburn. Her brothers drove a horse and sulky the five miles to school for which they received sixpence a day per child, which helped in keeping the horse shod and also buying shoes for the children.
Mary left school at the age of 13 years of age. She helped her mother with the house work and farm chores. Her mother died when Mary was 16. She then kept house for her fathers and brothers.
Mary became very interested in Mission work from an early age,as a result of Mission Festivals where she heard missionaries from New Guinea preach.
She was also interested in becoming a nurse. Mary passed the nurse’s entrance exam in 1940 and was accepted as a trainee nurse at Albury District Hospital in April 1940.
After almost two and a half years training she contracted Tuberculosis. She spent the next six and a half years in hospital, first at a sanitorium in Helensburgh (south of Sydney) and then with family in Murray Bridge.
In August 1955, Mary was accepted as a nurses aide at Hermansburg Mission, Central Australia. In 1962 she transferred to Alice Springsto become a cottage mother for aboriginal children from cattle stations, so they could attend school. There were two cottages with 14 children in each.
In allMary spent 30 years in Central Australia - 15 years on staff of Finke River Mission, 8 years at Hermansburg Mission Station as a Nurses Aide and Kitchen supervisor and 7 years as Cottage Mother at Alice Springs.
Mary would read Bible stories to the children. On one occasion she asked the children what people have that animals don’t and one boy pipedup – PANTS! Not quite the answer that she was looking for – SOULS!
In 1970 Mary left Alice Springs. She then kept house for Mr Fred Lehman at Ouyen, Victoria until September 1977, when she returned to Temora to keep house for her brother, Fred.
Her interests were her church, helping the LadiesGuild with catering etc. She was a member of the Temora Hospital Auxiliary and the Cancer Patients Assistance Society. She also loved reading, cooking and gardening.
Mary cared for her brother until his death in 2000.
Having no children of her own, she was also close to her nieces and nephews, Margaret, Charles, John and Annette and their families.
Mary continued to live in Baker Street until December 2004 when she moved to Narraburra Lodge on the 30th November 2006.
Mary passed away peacefully early on Tuesday morning, 13th March, 2007, a month before her 91st birthday.
Mary was predeceased by all her brothers, Fred, Max and August. She will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law Gert Bertelsmeier and her nephewsCharles and John and nieces Margaret and Annette and their families.
Mary was a loving, warm and caring person and had lots of time for other people as well. Shehad a deep faith in God and his love and care for her. Mary was a quiet Christian lady whose life was devoted to helping others.
