"Mrs. J.R. Brockman Dies.
Mrs. Mattie E. Brockman, wife of J.R. Brockman, and mother of Mrs. Wm.
Grizzell of this city, died at her home on East Second street, at an
early hour Monday morning, following an illness of several months, at
the age of 58 years, 8 months and 12 days.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church Tuesday afternoon
at 1 o'clock by Rev. Jas. Hise of Bynumville, a relative of the family,
and assisted by Rev. F.D. Risk, pastor of the church. Interment followed
at the city cemetery.
Mattie E. Hattler was born March 7, 1859, in Arkansas. At the death of
both her parents at the age of five years, she went to Macon county to
reside and lived there until she was fifteen, when she went to make her
home with her uncle, Hiram Robertson, near Sharon, Howard county, and
continued her residence there until her marriage to J.R. Brockman on
October 31, 1876. Just before going to Howard county she professed
faith in Christ and united with the Baptist church at Old Hebron, Macon
county, and continued steadfastly in the faith and in the service of the
Master, and reared her family in nurture and admonition of the Lord.
To Mr. and Mrs. Brockman were born two children, Mrs. Wm. Grizzell of
this city, and Robert Embree Brockman of Clifton Hill, where the family
resided for many years before moving to this city about a year ago.
In the Brockman home were also reared two nieces, Mrs. Davis of
Madison, Monroe county, and Miss Willma Heinbaugh of Moberly.
These together with the husband and four grand children survive, and
to whom we offer sincere condolence."
