Obituary Published in the Modesto Bee on November 27, 2009 Muriel M. Upton MURIEL M UPTON APRIL 1916 ~ NOV 2009 Muriel May Brown Upton, 93,passed away at her home at Paramount Court in Turlock on November18th. She was born April 11, 1916 in Klamath Falls, OR. She was raisedon a 160-acre homestead at Crystal, OR at the north end of KlamathLake. She attended the lower grades at schools in Klamath County. Shegraduated from high school in Salem, OR. After she married and raisedher family she enrolled, at age 55, at California State University,Stanislaus where she earned both a Bachelor's degree (1975) and aMaster's degree (1979) in Counseling Psychology. Two years later shesat for her state boards and was licensed as a Marriage, Family andChild Therapist. Prior to going to college she worked for over 16years as a Civil Service Employee at Castle Air Force Base inCalifornia and Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. The latter assignmentwas when her husband, Howard, was assigned to Eielson AF Base. Sheworked as a marriage and family therapist for 20 years, including herinternships. She has been active during her life as a therapist,workshop leader and teacher, lecturer, board member of Family ServiceAgency of Stanislaus County; and devoted wife, mother, andgrandmother. She and her husband, Howard, were both active for manyyears in the First Christian Church in Turlock. While at Eielson AirForce Base, she was awarded a certificate for outstanding Service inthe Base Chapel by the USAF in 1963. She received the parent-teacheraward for outstanding service in Turlock in 1983. In 1987, she wasnamed the Outstanding Woman of the Year for Distinguished Service inStanislaus County, and received plaques and certificates ofappreciation from the California State Assembly, the State Senator ofthe 12th district, and the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors.Muriel is survived by seven children - Barbara (Bruce) MacPhail ofOakdale; Christian Michaels of Sedona, AZ; Bruce (Anitra Raju) Cooperof Hayward, CA; Lucille Cooper of Knoxville, TN; Nick (Leanna) Uptonof Alpine, CA; Katherine JoAnne (Clifford) Moore of Sundance, WY; andNancy (John) Berntson of American Fork, UT; siblings Irene Taylor ofKentucky; Celia Speece of McMinnville, OR; Ellen Riach of KlamathFalls, OR; and Grant Brown of Bonanza, OR; 15 grandchildren, 39 greatgrandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Muriel waspredeceased by her husband Howard Dale Upton (2005), her parents CecilMuriel Brown (1986) and Fred Grant Brown (1987), and one greatgrandchild (2007). Memorial contributions are encouraged for the FirstChristian Church of Turlock. There will be a Memorial Service at FirstChristian Church (180 South Denair Ave) on December 2nd at 11:00AMafter a private family inurnment.
