Biography Peter Reck, Sr. was born in Germany in 1817 and married about 1840 toAnna Mathias who was born in Germany in 1819 and died July 25, 1880.They migrated to Benton County, Missouri. He served as a Private inCompany "E", Benton County Missouri Home Guard under Captain Muller.He enlisted June 13, 1861 and the unit was disbanded September 13,1861. He was killed by bushwhackers in 1864 when he refused to divulgeinformation regarding Union troops. His neighbor was seized at thesame time and the two of them were taken to a place about 17 milesfrom their home near Cole Camp, Missouri where they were bound, shotand left for dead. His companion was dead but Peter Reck, though badlywounded with both legs useless, crawled home through timber andunderbrush on his hands and knees to tell of his experience and thefate of his neighbor. His condition was pitiful due to his injuriesand exposure and the fact that he had nothing but tree bark, berries,etc. to eat during the two weeks it took him to reach home. He diedalmost immediately on reaching his destination. After his death, hiswife married a Mr. Wiese. Peter and Anna are buried, along with fourchildren of Peter Jr. and Dora Reck, in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemeterynear what was formerly Boeschenville, Missouri.
