Obituary in the St.Joseph News-Press, St. Joseph, Missouri, November25, 2009 Dr. Ron Engelken St. Joseph 1945 - 2009 Ronald Alan Engelken DVM, 63, St. Joseph, passed from this life onSunday, November 22, 2009, into the arms of his Lord and Savior. Hedied after a courageous battle with cancer that broke his body but nothis spirit or his bond with his family. Ron was born December 19, 1945, in Manhattan, Kan., to Pat (Graham)and Ben Engelken. He was the second oldest in a family of 13 siblingsbrothers: Dave, Larry, Joe, Mike, Chris, Jeff, and Terry; sisters,Alice, Diane, Nancy, Elaine, and Lisa. Ron attended high school in Corning, Kan., graduating in 1963. Fromthere he went to K State, graduating in 1970 with a degree inVeterinary Medicine. Ron married Sharon Fairbank in 1969, to this union were born Matthew(California) and Laura, they later divorced. Ron worked for Countryside Vet Clinic in 1970 until 1975 when he wentto work for Dr. Robert Azelton who had a mixed practice and the St.Joseph Stockyards vet work. In 1980 Ron became partners with Dr. StanWorl and they had a large animal practice and continued stockyardwork. When Dr. Worl retired Ron became the sole owner and started R & VEngelken Inc., which he ran with Valerie his wife of 28 years. Ron wasthe St. Joseph Stockyards veteranian until his death. Ron and Valerie married in 1981. They worked together for over 30years. To this union five sons were born: Caleb, Connecticut; Seth,Texas; Eli, Alaska; twins, Luke, North Carolina, and Jesse, St.Joseph. Also considered part of their family was Vanessa ChavezDurbin, Georgia. Ron was a member of Agency Methodist Church and dearly loved hischurch family. Ron was an incredibly hard worker and loved his job as a Veteranianand the Stockyards practice. His passion was sports and kids. He coached boys basketball, girlsvolleyball, and was the Athletic Director at St. Joseph Christian whenit first started. He also coached baseball in the South Side with manyChampionship teams of all ages. Ron also coached basketball in youthleagues and was very proud of all their accomplishments. He was a wonderful example and mentor to many young people. Ron wasthrilled when many of his sons went to play sports in college. Ron was always active in all his sons interests from sports,timbersports, 4-H livestock showing, horses, and music. Ron instilled a good work ethic, moral values, and ambition in hissons and thru them he has left a wonderful legacy. He will be missed daily by many friends, co-workers, and clients, butespecially by his wife, sons, and family. Memorial Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home &Crematory. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Friday,Meierhoffer Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Operation Smile, 6435Tidewater Dr., Norfolk, VA 23509; or the Agency Methodist Church. Dr. Engelken has been cremated.
