Volkening Obituary Quietly and peacefully, William Henry Volkening, of Wells Creek, Belvue, Kansas, passed away near the end of the New Year's Day 1955. He had reached the age of 88 years , 3 month, and 23 days and had had unusually good health until the last few months. He was born September 9, 1866, in Cook County, Illinois,, near Elgin, the third son of Fred W. Volkening and his wife, Anna Hassenmann Volkening. In 1878 he came to this part of Kansas with his parents who pioneered a farm in the Wells Creek community of Wabaunsee county. It is un usual that Mr. Volkening made this same farm his home for the remainder of his lifetime, having lived on it 77 years. Mrs. Volkening returned to Illinois for a brief time during which he was received into the membership of Immanuel Evangelical Church of Hanover, Illinois, the rite of confirmation administered by the Rev. F Rasche on March 21, 1880. Later he transferred his membership to Immanuel Evangelical Church of Wells Creek which was organized in the same year shortly after he came back to Kansas. His parents were charter members of the new church which was built on a five acre tract of land they gave. At least one of the first pastors of the new congregation lived in the Volkening home until parsonage was erected. Twenty years later, in 1900, Mr. Volkening as a young man was a member of the church council and also of the building committee which supervised the construction of the present church building. On October 22, 1881, he was united in marriage to Mary Kolling at Immanuel Church by Rev. H Kupfornagel. They lived together for 57 years before her death in 1949, and had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1941. Four children were born to their union. Mr. Volkening was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Fred, Henry and August Volkening, his wife and a grandson,k Elliott Volkening. Immediate relatives who survive him are his children, Mrs. Alviena Pageler, Herman Volkening, Mrs. Amelia Piel and Mrs. Clara Holz all of Wells Creek community; a granddaughter, Mrs. Vada Vern Drayer, of Kansas City, KS and one sister in law, Mrs. A. W. Eisenmenger, of the community. There are mangy nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends who will miss him. Mr. Volkening is remembered as a man who kept his word and who was always patient and uncomplaining in nature, especially during his last illness. Funeral services were conducted at Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church of Wells Creek on January 5, 1955, with the Rev. A Vernon Kurz officiating. Pallbearers were William Kensing, Lee Kensing, G. P. Pageler, Henry Peters, August Thowe, and Fred Volkening. Interment was in the church cemetery.
