Er heiratete 1886 in Münster Martha Soldmann (* 21. November 1865 in Dortmund; † 12. Oktober 1934 in Berlin), Tochter des Oberpostdirektors Carl Soldmann. Aus der Ehe gingen drei Kinder hervor: Otto (1887–1958), Kapitänleutnant; Gertrud verh. Grosse (* 1889) und Martha verh. Rinkel (* 1896). Theodor und Martha Fontanes letzte Ruhestätte befindet sich auf dem <a title="Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf" href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%BCdwestkirchhof_Stahnsdorf">Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf</a> imKapellenblock, <a title="Erbbegräbnis" href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erbbegr%C3%A4bnis">Erbbegräbnis</a> 74.</p>
