From : "Anthony Heisserer Geneology, page 79. The NEWSBOY _____ Sept 26, 1896 - obituary - MIKE HEISSERER SWALLOWS A POWERFUL DRUG Mike Heisserer, son of Vincent Heisserer, and a brother to W.H. Heisserer, Democratic nominee for collector of Scott County, committed suicide Wednesday night. He ws 23 years old and had been married but a few weeks. Mike Heisserer and Miss Lillie Proffit had been sweet hearts for years--much to the annoyance of the Heisserer family. About a month ago the young couple slipped off and were married. It is notknown where they were married, nor by whom, but it is said they were married by a Catholic priest, at Cairo. The Heisserer family--especially the father--was much grieved over their conduct and Mike and his wife made their home with John Amos, a brother-in-law living west of Benton, where they have lived ever since their marriage. Wednesday evening Mike and his wife came to Benton to visit the sick child of her sister--Mrs. Henderson Humphrey. The child being very sick Mrs. Heisserer concluded to remain over night and Mike returned home alone. He remained in Benton, however, until after 10 o'clock, and those who met him say that he was in an unusually good humor and lively. At about 1 o'clock Mrs. John Amos heard an unusual noise in Mike's room that caused her to believe that something was wrong. She woke her husband who went in and called, but received no answer. He shook Mike but could not arouse him. By this time Mrs. Amos arrived with a light and discovered a letter on the desk addressed to "Mrs. Lillie Heisserer, Private." this startling discovery at once revealed the situation and Dr. Wade was sent for. the Dr. arrived too late, and Mike expired a short time after his arrival. It is presumed that his death was caused from the effects of morphine, but it has not yet been learned where it was obtained. In the note was a request "not to publish'" and therefore it may never appear in print. Among other things he requested that all his debts be paid, and also left a will. His life was insured for $10,000 and made payable to his wife.
