Álmos (Slovak, Croatian: Almoš) (died 1 September 1129) was a Hungarian prince, the son of King Géza I of Hungary and Synadene, brother of King Coloman. He held several governmental posts in the Kingdom of Hungary. Between 1084 and 1091 he was the duke of Slavonia; between 1091 and 1095 he was named duke of Croatia. King Ladislaus I, his uncle, wanted Álmos to succeed him as king of Hungary and wished to make Coloman a bishop. In 1095 King Ladislaus named his nephew Álmos, king of Croatia as his heir. Coloman, the elder brother, did not wish to be a bishop and escaped to Poland to gain support. He returned after King Ladislaus had died to claim his rights. In 1095 Coloman appointed him the duke of the apanage Nitrian duchy (Tercia pars regni). In 1097 Petar was defeated at Gvozd Mountain by Coloman. Álmos, supported by Germany and Bohemia, came in conflict with Coloman in 1098. On August 21, 1104 Álmos married Predslava, the daughter of Svyatopolk II of Kiev. When Duke Álmos returned from the Holy Land and realized that his Duchy had been incorporated into the Royal Domains, he rebelled against his brother again. Coloman made peace with Álmos in 1108, but only to have Álmos and his son Béla imprisoned in 1108 or 1109 and then blinded in 1113 to prevent them from becoming the future king. After this he went on to live in seclusion at the monastery of Dömös founded by himself. In 1126, after a conspiracy against King Stephen II, Duke Álmos had to escape to his relatives in Byzantium, until his death in 1129. His son Béla the blind would succeed as king of Hungary in 1131.
