Nach zwei Privatschulen kam Lilienthal an das Collegium Fridericianum, zwischenzeitlich auch an das (katholische) Kgl. Gymnasium Braunsberg, wo ein Vetter Oberlehrer war. Ab Ostern 1835 studierte er Philologie an der Albertus-Universität Königsberg. Er wurde Mitglied der ebenfalls eher katholischen Copslandsmannschaft Baltia, die 1840 vom Corps Masovia übernommen wurde. ImAlbum amicorum (Albertus-Universität) ist ein studentisches Aquarellporträt von ihm erhalten.

Nachdem er das Studium 1839 beendet hatte, konnte er krankheitshalber erst später zum Examen pro facultate docendi antreten und 1841/42 das Probejahr am Gymnasium in Braunsberg absolvieren. Er blieb zwei weitere Jahre als wissenschaftlicher Hilfslehrer. Vom Provinzial-Schulkollegium wurde er in gleicher Eigenschaft an das Gymnasium in Kulm berufen. Im September 1845 wurde er als 8. ordentlicher Lehrer fest angestellt. Mit 38 Jahren starb er an der Cholera.
