Robert 'with-the-beard' De Umfreville, Lord of Tours and Vian

Tradition has it that Robert De Umfreville was a kinsmanofWilliamtheConqueror and sailed with him to England in 1066 andindeedaRobertd'Amfreville does appear amongst the Battle Abbey listoftheConquerorscompanions. Tours may be TourvillenearAmphreville-la-campagneinNormandy. There are seven other AmphrevillesinNormandy but it ismostlikely that the family name hailsfromAmphreville-sur-Iton inOrne(G.E.C. Complete peerage (1910) VolI,p146).What is certain is thatby1130 a Robert De Umfreville was BaronofPrudhoe and erected a motteandbailey castle there to guard theTynecrossing and a castle atHarbottleto hold down the Coquet valleywhileElsdon was theadministrative centreof the liberty. If indeed theRobertBaron ofPrudhoe is the same RobertLord of Tours and Vian then hewouldhave been93 years old at least whenhe died which seems very unlikelybutnotimpossible. It is reasonable inthis case to putforwardsomealternatives:

1) Robert with-the-beard did NOT 'come over with the conqueror',oratleastdidn't fight at Hastings but came over later, was givenlandsinRedesdaleas part of the settlement of Northumbria by RobertCurthoseandbuilt Elsdoncastle in 1080, his name being added later totheBattleAbbey list.

2) Robert with the beard came to England with the conquerorandRobertBaronof Prudhoe is his son (b c1075). Robert with-the-beardbuiltthecastle atElsdon. What IS certain is that the first UmfrevillecametoEnglandsometime before 1090 because one of them was inGlamorganin1091, theyeither built a motte and bailey castle at Elsdon ortookitover then(later) built castles at Prudhoe and Harbottle. Wealsoknowthat theUmfrevilles left relatives behind in Normandy. We knowofthisfamily linkbecause Sir Gilbert, the Earl of Kyme, ( d. 1421)wasawardedthe lands ofhis distant relative D'Amphreville,basedaroundAmphreville- sur-Iton, byHenry V.

3) Robert with the beard had 3 sons, Robert, GilbertandJordan.Robertwith-the-Beard built Elsdon c1080. The Conqueror diedin1085, thereignof his son Rufus was brief and troubled. When Rufuswasasassinatedthecountry was plunged into anarchy. During this timeRobertmay havetakenthe opportunity to take control of the liberty andthevitalbordercrossing (or at least establish greater authority overtheregion)takingthe revenues into his own pocket. Robert's secondsonGilbert wenttoGlamorgan in 1091 to campaign with Fitz Hamon, Robertwiththe bearddiedbefore 1130 when his eldest son Robert built Prudhoe.Robertdied in1145(aged c75) and Prudhoe passed to his son Odonell I.
