A BRIEF HISTORY OF WILLIAM DODGE OF BEVERLY 1629 - 1692 by Donald R.Dodge *

In the approximate year of our Lord 1604, John and MargeryDodgeofMiddleChinnock, County of Somerset, England, had born tothemWilliam, theirfirst of three sons. John Dodge and his sonsWilliam,Richard, andMichaelwere linearly descended from that Saxon raceofwarriors whoserved assteel clad barons in wars waged for the NormankingsofEngland. On April 25, 1629, Mr. William Dodge joined a companyofPuritanplantersand craftsmen and journeyed to America on theLion'sWhelp, asmall shipof 120 tons displacement. The Lion's Whelp andhersister shipstheTalbot and the George carried their goods andpassengersto Naumkaeg, theIndian name for the North American territorysettledbyEngland'sMassachusetts Bay Company at Salem.

William Dodge, aged 25 years, or thereabouts, was describedaswelloverusual stature, with a well formed athletic physique, withthedarkhair, eyes, and complexion typical of the ancient Britons.ReverendJohnWhiteof the Massachusetts Bay Company called Mr. WilliamDodge a'skillfuland painful husbandman' in reference to his skills asafarmer.Herecommended that Governor Endicott give William the charge ofateamofhorses to facilitate his work efforts intheexpandingPuritansettlements in the Salem area The records indicatethatWilliamreturnedto England on October 15, 1635 to be present athisfather'sdeathbed.William was one of three witnesses to John Dodge'swillwhichgave him asum of 40 pounds and a team of oxen. Thisinheritancewasdescribed assupplemental to whatever gifts his father hadgivenhimbefore he firstemigrated to the New World in 1629.

William returned to Salem, presumably with his inheritedmoneyandfarmanimals to resume his life as an English Planter. As afreemanoftheSalem settlement, William was given two lots of landcomprisedof80acres and 20 acres each, on September 3, 1637. InMay,1641,Williampurchased 200 more acres of good, farmable land fromJohnPalfrey.Theland was located in an area of Salem near the headwatersoftheBassRiver. This land area later became part of the new townofBeverlywhereWilliam made his permanent residence in 1645.

William Dodge's 280+ acres of land made his land holdings thelargestoftheearly 17th century Planters according to the recorded landdeedsoftheSalem/ Beverly area. Records show that on December 3, 1641 hegave40acresof his land to his brother Richard Dodge who had emigratedtoSalemin 1638,nine years after his younger brother William.

William Dodge was a well respected farmer and citizenoftheSalem/Beverlycommunity. The area's historical texts andrecordsshowover 35 instanceswhere Farmer William was appointed or electedtopublicservices for hiscommunity. He held such offices asselectman, grandjuryman, and surveyorof roads and properties. He is notedas one ofthefounders of the FirstChurch in Beverly in 1667. He was aneighborandclose friend of theReverend John Hale.

Farmer William Dodge Sr. died in his 80's at some timebetweentheyears1685 and 1692. He deeded most of his property to hissecondsonCaptainWilliam Dodge. No mention is made in Farmer William'swill , orinotherrecords, of his bequests to his eldest son CaptainJohnDodge, whooutlived his father by more than 30 years. It isrecordedthatCaptainJohn Dodge and his two brothers fought in thePuritancommunity'swarswith the Naragansett indians. Farmer Dodge'syoungest sonJosiahwaskilled in battle at Bloody Brook, South Deerfield, along withthe sonsofBenjamin Balch and Humphrey Woodberry.

Farmer William Dodge's surviving sons John and Williamlivedlongandprospered in their Puritan community of Beverly. CaptainJohnownedandoperated a successful grist mill at the head waters oftheBassRiverwhile Captain William continued as a prosperous farmeronhisfather'soriginal family homestead in Beverly. ASSOCIATIONS: Richard Dodge, Sr., of Beverly named 'mybrotherWilliamDodgeSr.' one of the overseers of his 14 November 1670will [EQC4:405].Therewas another Dodge brother still in England at thetime ofWilliam's1685testamentary deed, but we do not see if he trulycame. These twobrothersare said to be sons of John and Margery (_____)DodgeofMiddlechinnock,Somersetshire [Dawes-Gates 2:315, 319]. There wasathirdbrother, Michael, who did not come to New England, but whosesonWilliamdid [Dodge Gen 13;Dawes-Gates 2:319]. COMMENTS: In the 28 May 1629 letter from the Governorand DeputyoftheMassachusetts Bay Company in London to John Endicott andhiscouncilinNew England is a request from 'Mr. Whyte, the minster,'toshowalllawful favor and respect unto the planters that came overintheLyonsWhelpe out of the counties of Dorset and Somerset; thatyouwouldappointunto William Dodg, a skillful and painful husbandman, thechargeof ateam of horses [MBCR 1:401]. According to a family traditionWilliam Dodge returned toEnglandsometimebetween 1629 and 1636 to acquirea wife and an associatedgiftfrom hisfather. While the absence of anyrecord of William inNewEngland betweenthese dates makes this story apossibility, it isnothingmore than that. On 27 December 1636 'WilliamDodg's boy whipped for running awayfromhismaster several times' [EQC1:4]. If this servant is includedinthehousehold a year later when thegrant of marsh and meadowwasmade, crediting William Dodge with a householdof five, then four ofthefiveare accounted for: William Dodge, wifeElizabeth, son John, andunnamedservant boy. There is the possibility, then, of a child olderthanJohn, but this fifth person might as well beanother servant, or akinsmanofWilliam or his wife. In a documentpresented at June Term, 1679, John West,agedaboutfifty-eight years, deposed that being present when WilliamDodge,Sr.,and John Proctor, Sr.,made up the match between John DodgeandSarahProcter, son and daughter ofDodge and Procter, saidWilliamDodgepromised to give a parcel of land withhis son John, andsaidProctorengaged to give Ð40 with his daughter Sarah.Dodgefurthersaid'Notwithstanding what is given, what shall theseyoungbeginners doforhousehold stuff,' and deponent proposed that Dodgeshouldgive hissonJohn Ð10 and Proctor should give his daughter Ð5 to bepaidatthemerchant's, to which proposition they both agreed [EQC 5:195].With Roger Haskell he was to round up neighbors to mend thetwobridgesonthe country way over the Bass River toward Wenham on26October 1646[STR1:145, 148]. William Dodge and Henry Bartholomew, asagents for Mr.GeorgeTaylor, late inhabiting in Lynn, sold toRichardJohnson one houseandbarn and land, and four acres of salt marsh[ELR1:19]. Along withtheother executors of Thomas Scruggs, William'Dodg'sold ten acres toEdmondPatch of Salem [ELR 1:33]. William Dodge wasone of two attorneys for Gervis Garford, whowasaccusedby Roger Haskell ofnot laying out upland as agreed [JuneTerm,1657, EQC2:44]. William Dodgesued Robert Haskell for notmaintaining afence [JuneTerm, 1659, EQC2:160]. The matter was somethingof a draw, since yearslater the courtordered that the court costs bedividedbetween the twomen and that theland be divided equally [JuneTerm, EQC2:311, 313]. Itwas over a similar,if not identical, fence thatRogerHaskell and OsmondTrask came to blows.John Harris, an eighteen yearoldservant of WilliamDodge, testified thathe saw Haskell attack Traskwitha pitchfork andthat he, William Dodge,John Dodge, and William Fiskeranto them whenthey heard the outcry[November Term, 1661, EQC2:323].William's son,William, had little betterluck with fences, andboth menfound themselvesdeposing about them in theMarch Term, 1671 [EQC4:332]. 'Farmer John Porter,' William Dodge, andRoger Haskell, all ofSalem, wereto view the highway at Lynn [June Term,1660, EQC 2:218].WithMajorWilliam Hathorn and Jeffrey Massey, WilliamDodge wasappointedacommissioner to bound out the thirds of Eunice, thewidowofJonathanPorter [November Term, 1660, EQC 2:256]. William Dodge,John Porter and Mr. Edmond Batterwereappointedadministrators of theestate of Samuel Porter, NovemberTerm,1659 [EQC2:192]. William Dodge Sr.took the inventory of the estateofThomasScruggs of Salem 24 June 1654[EPR 1:185] and of thewidowElizabethHardy of Salem 11 November 1654 [EPR1:200] and of theestate ofLotConant 29 September 1674 [EQC 5:432].William Dodge Sr. and Joseph Ayers deposed at the NovemberTerm1678thatthey had been asked by Ephraim Fellows to appraise a parcelofcornwhichwas destroyed by swine [EQC 7:120]. William Dodge, Sr.,agedaboutseventyyears at April Term, 1679, deposed about a dying cow[EQC7:181]. At the September Term, William Dodge Sr. joined withotherinfluentialmenof Beverly, Wenham and Salem, to request furtherassistancefromtheGeneral court in establishing the final bounds ofthesetowns[EQC8:19-20]. The Josiah Dodge who was killed in King Philip'sWar has beensuggestedasa son of William Dodge [Dodge Gen 15; Dawes-Gates2:323]. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: The basic genealogy of the Dodgefamilywaspublishedin 1894 by Joseph Thompson Dodge [Genealogy of theDodgeFamilyof EssexCounty, Mass. 1629-1894 (Madison, Wisconsin, 1894),citedaboveas DodgeGen]. Mary Walton Ferris prepared studies of bothWilliamDodgeand hisbrother Richard Dodge [Dawes-Gates 2:315-28].
