ASSOCIATIONS: William Woodbury, brother of John, followed himtoNewEnglandby 1636 [STR 1:26], and records for William have beenfoundinSouthPetherton, Somersetshire [Dawes-Gates 2:829-38; EIHC24:1-42].JohnWoodburyhas not been found in the South Petherton records, but if hewasnot fromthat parish, he must certainly have been from thatpartofSomersetshire.COMMENTS: In a deposition made on 16 February1680HumphreyWoodburyrecalled that 'when I lived in Somersetshire inEngland... myfather,John Woodbury, since deceased, did about 56 years agoremovetoNewE[ngland] and there I travelled with him as far asDorchester, andIunderstood that my said father came to N.E. by order ofacompanycalledDorchester company, among whom Mr. White (Rev.)ofDorchester,inEngland, was an active instrument.... After about 3yearsabsence mysaidfather returned to England & made us acquainted withwhatsettlementtheyhad made in N.E. & that he was sent back by somethatintended tosettlea plantation about 3 leagues west of Cape Ann.Tofurther thisdesignafter about a year's stay in England myfatherreturned to N.E.andbrought me with him. We arrived at the placenowcalled Salem in oraboutthe month of June, 1628' [EIHC 13:137].RICHARDBRACKENBURY, whocame toNew Eng~land with JOHN ENDICOTT, deposed on20January 1680 that'we cameashore, at a place now called Salem, the 6thofSeptember 1628'and foundthere several settlers, including JohnWoodbury[EIHC 13:138].Hubbard,writing about two years later, may haveseen thesedepositions, and wouldcertainly have talked to these two men, inpreparinghis accountof theseevents [Hubbard 105-9]. John Woodbury was aconscientious man, who in his few short years asapartof Salem government, did more than others accomplished inmuchlongerlives. He was present forevery selectmen's meeting untildeathinterruptedhim in mid-stride in thewinter of 1641. With Peter Palfrey and John Balch, John Woodbury suedElizabethBabsonatSalem court 24 September 1639 over an undisclosed matter[EQC1:12].WithPeter Palfrey, he was ordered to measure out a half acreofland atThomasOliver's new house, 29 September 1640 [EQC 1:23]. He wasoneofthe menentrusted with the duty of laying out two hundred acresforMr.Endicott,27 January 1636[/7] [STR 1:35]. John Woodbury gave DeborahHolmes one bushel of corn, as did severaloftheother Salem townsmen, whodenied her land, she 'being a maid'settinga'bad precedent to keep housealone' [STR 1:32]. Lieutenant Davenport, Mr. Henry Bartholomew and JohnWoodburywerethethree prudent men chosen to arbitrate the suitbetweenRichardIngersolland Joshua Verin, 29 June 1641 [EQC 1:29]. A JohnWoodbury married Joanna Humphrey on 21 June 1596atBurlescombe,Devonshire,and this has been thought to be a marriageofthe immigrant, and also anexplanation for the given name of hisfirstson. But this wifewas buried on5 June 1601, and so, unlessHumphreyWoodbury grosslyunderestimated his ownage in his depositon of1680,Joanna (Humphrey)Woodbury cannot be hismother. In any case, thismarriage seems much tooearly for the immigrant[Dawes-Gates2:825].Raymon Meyers Tingley gave aname and exact date forthe secondmarriageof John Woodbury[Tingley-Meyers 450], but as with allitemsattributableonly to thisauthor, we should meet these data withextremeskepticism. The mother of Humphrey Woodbury was certainly not themother of therestofJohn Woodbury's children. But did the immigrant havetwowivesorthree? The last three children of John Woodbury werebornin a spanoffour years, from 1636 to 1640, but his son John, to bemarriedby1654,must have been born some years before 1636. Two scenarioscometomind.First, John Woodbury may have had two wives in additiontothemother ofHumphrey, a second wife (whom he may have marriedwhileinEngland in1627 and 1628) who was the mother of John and athirdwife(Agnes orAnne) who was the mother of the last threechildren.Second, given theapproximate date of birth for the son John, itmay bethat theimmigrantJohn Woodbury, on his return trip to England inlate1627 andearly 1628,married a second time, to Agnes, impregnatedthissecond wife, andreturned to New England without her. She would thenhavecome toSalemsome years later and begun having children again in 1636.BIBILIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1931 Mary Walton Ferrispreparedawell-documentedaccount of the family of JohnWoodbury[Dawes-Gates2:823-28].
