James Hamilton (2nd Earl of Arran and Duke of Châtelherault) 1516 - 1575
Regent of Scotland and soldier. Hamilton was the son of James,the1stEarlof Arran (1475 - 1529) and, through his mother,great-grandsonofKingJames II (1430-60). This gave rise to Hamilton'sclaim to thethroneofScotland. He became Regent on the death of King JamesV (1512 -1542)andgained his French Duchy for negotiating the marriage oftheyoungMary,Queen of Scots (1542 - 1587) to the Dauphin of France(1549).Hedemittedthe Regency in favour of Mary of Lorraine (1515-60) in1554onconditionthat he would get the Crown if the young Marydiedchildless, however hisclaim seemed lost when it became clear thatthesuccessionwas promised toFrance. However this planned succession didnottakeplace when Mary'shusband, by then King Francis II ofFrance, died.Hamilton then triedunsuccessfully to arrange a marriagebetweenMary andhis son, anotherJames (c.1537 - 1609).
Hamilton's sympathies swayed between support for QueenMaryandtheProtestant nobles who wished to see her removed, undoubtedlybecausehestill hoped to fall heir to the throne. He withdrewto hisFrenchestatesin 1565, returned in 1569, was arrested by RegentMoray(1531-70)andfinally signed the Pacification of Perth (1572) inwhichheacknowledgedthe succession of King James VI (1566 - 1625).
