Christell succeeded his father Adam, and married Maud,daughterofIngelramPercy, Lord Topcliff in Yorkshire. He was a verypiousman,'more given todevotion than to worldliness,' says Maitland;andanotherfamily chroniclertells us that he was a man who lovedneitherstrife norwrong, but ratherto read and to pray. He was aconsiderablebenefactorof the Church,particularly out of the estates inEngland,which headministered duringhis father's lifetime. His brothersettledalso inthat part of England inwhich manyScoto-Normans(originallyAnglo-Normans) were large landowners,and isdescribed as 'SirJohn Setonof Seton, in Yorkshire.' Dugdalementions inthose northeasternparts ofEngland an Ivo de Seton and a'Capella deSeton,' and the villaetterritorium de Seton. Camden(Britannia) namesSeton, inNorthumberland,as part of the barony ofDe-la-Vall in thethirteenthcentury; and 'SetonDelavell,' as also'Monk-Seton,' is plainlymarked inthe superbcollection of maps in theTheatrum Orbis Terrarum ofWilliamand JohnBlaeu, published at Amsterdamin 1648. These names ofplaces arenowmostly written Seaton, but it wasnot so formerly; and theoldfeudalbarons Delaval--'of the Vale'--wereoriginally Setons-Delavalandanearly offshoot of our ancient family. Itwas probably fromoneofChrystell de Seton's donations that Pope InnocentIV. confirmed(asinDugdale's Monasticon) at Lyons, in 1245, to the Priorof theMonasteryofSaint James of Wartry Grangiam de Seton cumterris,pratis,pascuis,nemoribus, piscariis, et omnibus pertinentiis suis.Hedied inold age,before 1270:
