Will of Richard Braswell the 1st 1724/1725 IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. This being the last Will & Testament ofRICHARD BRASWELL being Sick & Weak but in perfect Mind & Memory thanksbe to God for it. FIRST I Give and Bequeath my Soul to Almighty Godhoping to find Mercy. I Give my Body to the Earth therein to be Buriedafter a decent Christian manner and all my Worldly Goods as followethafter my Debts being paid. 1st. I Give unto my well beloved Son Richard Brasewell one shillingand no more. 2dly I Give unto my Son Robert Brasewell Ten Shillings worth of myEstate and no more at present. 3dly I give unto my Son Valentine Braswell Ten Shillings and no moreat present. 4thly I Give unto my Son Jacob Ten Shillinggs worth and no more atpresent. 5thly I Give unto my Son John Braswell Ten Shillings worth and no moreat present. 6thly I Give unto my Daughter Martha Murfy Ten Shillings worth and nomore at present. Isle of Wight County Record #2, THE GREAT BOOK, PAGE 174 Descendants of Richard Bracewell and Sarah Sampson share the commonnames of Sampson and Charity and Kindred, indicating that at aminimum, Sarah is a likely ancestor of all of these. The name Charityis first known to be used in 1740, indicating that the marriage to theKindred family occured before that time. RICHARD and SARAH had 8 children. RICHARD's will was probated in Isleof Wight Co., VA on 28 Jan/Jul 1725, and witnessed by EDWARD POWERS,SR., and EDWARDS POWERS, JR. He gave 10 sheep to each of his sons anddaughters: RICHARD, ROBERT, VALENTINE, JACOB, JOHN, MARIAH/MARYMURPHY, ANN STRICKLAND and JAMES WILLIAMS. His grandaughter, SUSSANAHBRASWELL received a cow. He left his estate to SARAH, except for 10shillings to each of his surviving children. He signed a petition inOctober 1677 to pardon his brother-in-law, WILLIAM WEST in Bacon'sRebellion: "...a rebel absconding who took up arms against the Indiansby whom his father had been most barbarously murdered, was takenprisoner and carried aboard ship, from hense to prison was wascondemned to death, but made his escape and has not yet been found. Wepray for his life and the restitution of his estate to his wife andchildren." (Boddie, John B., "Seventeenth Century Isle of WightCounty, Virginia."). Shortly after 1700, most of RICHARD's familydrifted southward into North Carolina, in search of fresh lands fortobacco cultivation. They settled along Albermarle Sound and the lowerTar River valley (now Edgecombe and Nash counties) where some of themalso took up the naval stores industry, producing turpentine, itch andspars for the Royal Navy. RICHARD was still in Nansemond Co., VA in1704. 9 Feb 1694: RICHARD, along with his brother-in-law, WILLIAM WEST, werewitnesses for JAMES & ELIZABETH CORLEY for their assignment of theirBlackwater patent to THOMAS KIRBY. RICHARD signed with his usualreverse capital "R". (Deed Book 1, 1688-1704, p. 1030) RICHARD identifies himself as the son of ROBERT BRACEWELL, CLERK(Reverend) in a deed of 9 Oct. 1674, in where he and his wife, SARAHsold to THOMAS GREEN 300 of the 400 acres he received by deed of giftfrom his father on 16 Jan 1660. On 9 Aug 1681, RICHARD and SARAH sold2 acres to WILLIAM WEST. They were in Nansemond Co., VA to acknowledgethe deed which was witnessed by ARTHUR JONES, JOHN PITT and THOMASPITT. RICHARD (R) BRACEWELL & SARAH (+) his wife WHEREAS my ffather ROBERT BRACEWELL Clerk did in his life tyme by deedof Guift dated the 16th of January 1660 give unto me RICHARD BRACEWELLhis Sonne, one pcell of Land conteining about 400 acres, being pte ofa Tract of Land conteining 1600 Acres lyeing in the Isle of WightCounty granted unto Lt Col JOHN UPTON by patten dated the 16th of Novr1638 & by the sd UPTON sold to WM UNDERWOOD & be severall moreConveyances upon Record derived to my ffather ROBERT BRACEWELL & fromhim to me his Sonne, of which four hundred Acres I the sd RICHARD &SARAH my wife have by deed dated the 7th of ffebry 1673 Sould untoTHOMAS GREEN two hundred Acres lyeing on the ffreshett between MrIZARDs & THOMAS POOLEs Land, And have alsoe by another deed sould untoWM WEST One hundred Acres lyeing on the other side of the Runnadjoyning to another tract of Land lately belonging to my sd ffatherROBERT BRACEWELL.
