Murlin A. Bernd Murlin A. Bernd of Hartford, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee, Mequon. He was 81 years old. He was born June 13, 1923 in Hartford to Alwin and Elsie (nee Roemer) Bernd. Murlin married Althea Lackas. She preceded him in death. He married Judith Schessler on December 1, 1984 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hartford. Murlin graduated from Hartford Public Elementary and High School. Following high school he worked for the National Tea Company, before serving his country during World War II with the United States Army from 1943-46. He served in the United States, Philippine Islands, and Japan. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he went to work at Libby’s until 1956 when he went to work at the Hartford Parkview Clinic, where he served for 32 years, becoming the clinic administrator. Murlin was very involved in the community. He was a city alderman from 1954-58 and again later from 1992-2004, mayor of the city of Hartford from 1958-1962. He also served on the Hartford Planning Commission, was the commissioner of Washington County Civil Services from 1991-2001, and was a director at Hartford Savings Bank. He was a member of St. Mary of the Hill Parish, the Hartford VFW Post #8834, American Legion Post #19, Kettle Moraine Lions Club, Hartford Senior Friends, the Hartford Memorial Hospital Foundation, Hartford City Band, the Hartford Area Development Corp., and was a life member of the Wisconsin Medical Group Managers Association. He is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Judith; three stepsons, Jeffrey (Kathy) Sponholz of Morton, Illinios, Randy (Tracy) Sponholz of Hartford, and Brian Schessler of Oshkosh; five step-grandchildren, Brittney, Justin, Stephanie, Kaylea, and Erin; great-grandson, Kizer; and brother, Cal (Sally) Bernd of Menomonee Falls. Murlin is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by first wife, Althea Bernd; his parents; brother, Kenneth Bernd; and sister, Letitia Keilman. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 16, 2005 at 9 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Therese, Level 2, Holy Hill, Hubertus with Fr. Cyril Guise officiating. Family greeted relatives and friends on Sunday, May 15 from 2-7 p.m. at the Shimon Funeral Home, 824 Union St., Hartford, with a 7 p.m. Prayer Vigil. Entombment at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield was at 11 a.m. on Monday. Memorials to Lion’s International or the Hartford VFW appreciated. Shimon Funeral Home assisted the family.
