Nach dem frühen Tod seines Vater kam Gustav als Pflegesohn ins Haus derbegüterten Witwe Ostendorff, die ihn als Pflegesohn und Pflegebruder desGottfried Ostendorff jun. aufnahm.
Gustav lebte die ganze Schulzeit über bei den Ostendorffs und war später inder gleichen Studentenverbindung (Burschenschaft Gothia) wie sein PflegebruderGottfried. Er studierte Medizin und wurde Arzt. Später war er Chefarzt imKrankenhaus Berlin-Neukölln. Sein letzter Titel war Prof. Dr. Gustav Dencks.
