Immigrated between 1836 and 1840 to South Australia
I believe that Stephen and Mary SHERWELL (Challen) came to South Australia, with their four Children, Fanny, William, George & Stephen, between 1836 and 1840 (they appear on the January 1st, 1841 CENSUS). Both William and Stephen have connections to the Merchant Navy. Stephen’s occupation is listed as a Greenwich Pensioner on his Death Certificate and his father William’s occupation is listed as a seaman. I had been unable to find any trace of the family’s emigration, hence I always suspected William Senior helped them on their journey to Australia.Recently I was contacted by another SHERWELL family history contact that believes that they have found the details of the emigration under the name SHERGOELL.This information was found in a book called “A Free Passage to Paradise” which is a book of passenger lists of United Kingdom emigrants applying for free passage to South Australia 1836-1840.It lists an application as Stephen SHERGOELL, accompanied by 1 female and 4 children. Application number 6731 (9 Jan 1840), embarkation number 4204 on the ship Orleana which arrived in South Australia 10 July 1840. The name Stephen SHERGOELL does not appear on the above mentioned Census, but Stephen SHERWELL does !I believe that this information has been verified as being correct and that Stephen and Mary SHERWELL were assisted with their immigration by their local church “poor house”.Gordon Sherwell - 2005 - gordon_sherwell-at-hotmail.com
