Karyn Walton gave death dates

From Helen Preston:

Hi Ali - Great to hear back. I am sure I can help you quite a lot. As for the Stevens - I will gladly send you a copy of info and certificates that I have if you give me an address. The police records state James was free to the colony and his trade was a Baker, and I only presume he came sometime after 1840. Still trying to find him arriving as he may have went to NSW first. Contact with Tassie hasn't shown anything as apparently a lot of the early records were lost around that time. Mary arrived with her family on the "Sir Charles Napier" 17 Feb, 1843 and as far as I know was not a convict. James died 24/7/1883 in Hotham,Victoria and Mary died 20/6/1884 in Hotham, Victoria. I have a copy of their marriage and death certificates which I can post to you as it is easier for me than emailing. (Quite a bit to send on the computer). The F stands for female and it was Annie Elizabeth that I mentioned previously. My searching has been done mainly with the discs I mentioned and some on the Tas site you know of. The Stevens in Victoria were mainly around Thornbury and Kensington in the early days. My searching started with trying to find a photo of my mum's father as he died before I was born and I knew nothing much about him. Now I have photos of him and his brothers and their mother Mary Ann Stevens(Wardley). Have attached photo of James, Mary and Mary Jane Stevens grave taken at Old Melbourne Cemetry. Pity no plaque - I felt rather sad about that when I went there. As for the discs I mention, you should be able to use them at the Library. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it but well worth the effort. Makes it so much easier. They are very expensive but I was lucky a friend had them(around $205.00plus). Maybe able to work something out further down the track for you. Please feel free to ask me to look stuff up for you - I don't mind - can do it straight away so no need to wait. NSW is online from 1788 - 1976 for deaths, 1788 - 1906 for births and marriages 1788 - 1976 . http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ this is the link. Sometimes if you GOOGLE a name you might get a lucky hit with someone elses research. Most states have a contact online, type in Australian BDM in search and a list should come up.Let me know about posting info to you and anything else. Hope to hear soon Helen
p.sp will ask you more about Ellen and Emily next time
