Jens Hansen Dead

Jens Hansen, one of Emmet County's prosperous and influential retired farmers, passed away at his home on the west side of the river last Saturday morning [6 Nov 1915]. Mr. Hansen had been in his usual health until Wednesday last, when he became afflicted with hemorrhage of the brain. Soon after becoming ill he dropped off into a slumber from which he never awoke.

Mr. Hansen was born in Schleswig, Germany, on March 14, 1860, where he lived until coming to the United States in the year 1880. On November 21, 1883, he was united in marriage to Marie Hansen at Sabula, where he was then residing. After their marriage they moved to Clinton County, where they farmed. From Clinton county they came to Emmet County, where they followed their chosen occupation of farming until about three years ago, when they removed to Estherville. While Mr. Hansen resided in Estherville he still retained his farming interests in the county, and was at all times interested in all matters pertaining thereto.

The funeral services were held from the Christian church, although the deceased was a member of the Danish Lutheran church, the Rev. J. S. Coffin having charge of the services at the church and the I. O. O. F. lodge, of which he was a member, having charge at Oak Hill Cemetery. The deceased is survived by a widow and nine children: Mrs. H. W. Rokenbrodt of Vigerville, Canada; Mrs. H. F. Origer, Rutland; John N., Chrissie, Raymond, Mamie, Alice and Emma, of Estherville, and Harry F. H. Hansen of Wallingford.

CLINTON:
The era of opulence came to an end by 1900, as the northern forests were depleted. The sawmills closed, but the railroad and river, providing economical transportation in all directions, attracted manufacturing and heavy industry. The city still boasts a number of magnificent Victorian mansions, including the Curtis Mansion, now the home of the Clinton Women's Club.

ESTHERVILLE:
First settled in 1856, Estherville was incorporated as a city in 1881. The City is named after Esther Ridley, wife of Estherville’s founder Robert Ridley. In the 1870’s people began immigrating to the area from Scandinavian countries, Germany and Ireland, and made up the populace of the area. Estherville is the county seat of Emmet County, which is named after Irish leader Robert Emmet. A historical event of great significance happened on May 10, 1879, when a meteor fell north of Estherville that had a total weight of 774 pounds. Parts of it are on display in museums around the world.
Today, Estherville allows you to rest in a peaceful relaxing environment, while still experiencing the excitement of the Iowa Great Lakes only a 15-minute drive away. The City is privileged with excellent educational opportunities, health care facilities, neighborhoods, entertainment, and recreational options. Approximately 7,000 people make Estherville their home.

Estherville offers visitors and citizens alike everything from quiet walks with nature to kayaking along the Des Moines River.
