Dear Stephan,
It was good to hear from you. I posted everything I know, but her is a synopsis with a few more details.
Sophia Nau married Peter Gerhardt in Philadelphia. The marriage records show that they were second cousins, which is why I am giving you his information as well. The church in which they were married gave the following information about them:
Both were Roman Catholic.
Sophia (Sophie) Nau was the daughter of Henry Nau and Anna Maria Fach. She was from Ginseldorf.
Sophia was born on Sept 17 1861 or 1863. She came to the Us in 1880, according to the 1900 census.
She was a "tailoress"
She and Peter married on Ap. 15. 1890
I do not know if she had any siblings, none of the godparents of the children have the surname of Nau or Gerhard.
Peter Gerhardt brn Dec 10 1867 or 1868; came from Bauerbach and was the son of Louis and Veronica Gerhard (Gerhard may have been her maiden name as well; this is not good!). Peter emigrated in 1889. Peter seems to have added the "t" to the end of his name in the U.S. He was a tailor. I know he had a brother that stayed in Germany.
Sophie and Peter had three children-Francis Louis, Florence Teresa and Charles John.
Sophie must have spoken French. Both Peter and Charles (my grandfather) raised birds including racing pigeons. In a letter to a Belgian pigeon fancier, my grandfather wrote that the man could respond in "Belgium" because his mother Sophie could read Belgium . I assume he meant French.
I really do not know too much as you can see. I was able to interiview my grandfather about his parents but he really didnt give me too much information. I will check my notes and see if I can add anything. I have not yet tried to locate German church records through the latter day saints. I think that looking at those, if much is available, would be the next step.
I was reading through the messageboard and was fascinated that you had a chronicle of farmhouses that your ancestor wrote.
If I uncover anything, I will be sure to contact you.
