\*SISTER ELIZABETH, 86, TAUGHT ENGLISH WITH A FLAIR

"When she was 23, Elizabeth Sandmeyer changed gears, deciding to put her love for acting, singing and dancing aside to do something she found more fulfilling -- serving the Catholic Church by becoming a Sister of Providence.

Sister Liz, as she came to be known, died of a heart attack Sunday (June 13, 2004) at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle. She was 86.

She had been a Sister of Providence for 63 years, spending her time teaching English, both to high-school students and immigrants.

She was born Aug. 8, 1917, in Yakima to Ellen Teresa Devine and John Jospeh Sandmeyer.

After attending the Sisters of Providence at Saint Joseph Academy in Yakima, she worked small jobs through the Depression. After two years, she had saved enough to attend Seattle College (now Seattle University). There, she continued contact with the church, waiting tables in the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace dining room to help pay for room and board.

In 1940, she decided to enter the Sisters of Providence in Seattle. She had been torn in the decision process, but by her third year of college, she made up her mind.

"I think she had always been drawn to that calling, I really do, and so she made her final decision," said her niece, Elizabeth Sanderson.

The next year, she received a bachelor of arts degree in literature from Seattle University and continued her studies, attending the University of Notre Dame in 1960, where she received a master's degree in literature. In 1972, she received a master's degree in social gerontology from Columbia University.

Along with her studies, she taught. She moved up and down the west coast, teaching English at every high school in the Sacred Heart Province between 1942 and 1982.

She delivered the day's lesson in the same way she'd deliver a line on stage, her friends said.

"She was strict, but a very good teacher, they didn't forget the things that she taught them. She also had a dramatic flair. People still talk about her performances - - - it was a fond Memory, said Sister Charlotte Van Dyke, who taught with her in Yakima.

In 1990, Sister Elizabeth worked with the elderly at the Heritage House at the Market in Seattle. From 1992 to 1998, she volunteered teaching English as a second language at Seattle's community colleges and at service agencies for immigrants. For her work, she was awarded the Washington Distinguished Citizen Award.

More recently, Sister Elizabeth moved to St. Joseph Residence in Seattle after suffering from cancer and a stroke. Still, said friend Dee Courtney, she put same energy into her recovery as she did her whole life.

In addition to her niece in Yakima, she is survived by a nephew, Dick Keller of Seattle."
