Heinrich LUTH

Notizen zu dieser Person

Heinrich and Dorothea, along with their sons Frederick, William, Henry, and Teodore, departed from the port of Hamburg and came to the United States on the Anne Delius, arriving in New York on October 27, 1864. He was 46, she was 39.

The exact whereabouts of the Heinrich Luth family between 1864 and 1879 are not entirely known, although evidence strongly suggests that they were in Elk Grove, Cook County, Illinois. Records from St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rodenberg (now Roselle), Illinois, indicate that in 1866 Frederick, Wilhelm, and Heinrich were confirmed as members of that church. The records show a single birthdate of August 30, 1851, in Kletzke, Brandenburg. (Roselle, Illinois, is located on the Cook County-Dupage County line about 3 miles west of Elk Grove, which is on the western edge of O'Hare Airport.) Heinrich and Dorothea's son Teodore died on March 24, 1872, and was buried in Elk Grove. Heinrich and Dorothea purchased 80 acres of farmland in Tripoli, Bremer County, Iowa, on March 19, 1879. The property was located in northern Bremer County near the Wopsipinicon River. Dorothea died on August 23, 1879 in Bremer County. She was buried in the cemetery at Saint Matthew's Luthern Church in Readlyn, Bremer County. The church is sometimes referred to in Luth genealogies as Pastor Lobeck's church. Dorothea was buried in plot G-24; the grave marker identifies her as "Dorothea Luth, frau von Heinrich Luth." Matthew Luth reported that on October 20, 1879, Heinrich and his son Frederick were both granted citizenship by the County Court of Cook County, Illinois. William was granted citizenship on October 31, 1879. It is possible, however, that the citizenship was granted to Heinrich's other son, Henry, and not Heinrich himself. The 1880 census for Fremont Township, Bremer County, shows Heinrich living on the family farm with his son Frederick and Frederick's wife Kathryn. Heinrich by then had Anglicized his name to "Henry." The 1880 census for Elk Grove Township, Cook County, Illinois, shows William Luth working as a "servant" for a farmer named John Barnes. Heinrich's family was not the only Luth in Bremer County. An 1894 atlas of the county shows that C. Luth owned 19 acres in Section 11 of Washington Township. Heinrich Luth died on May 22, 1902, and was reportedly buried in Fremont Cemetery, located in Section 15, Fremont Township, Bremer County, Iowa. A search of that cemetery on June 30, 1999, failed to locate a grave marker for Heinrich Luth. It is possible that his grave is not marked or that he is buried elsewhere.
