Wellington A. Thalman, a former professor at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and director of the child guidance clinic at SIUC , died Saturday afternoon at his home in Carbondale after an apparent heartattack.
Funeral services for Mr. Thalman, 80, will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale, with the Rev. Duane Lanchester, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove MemorialCemetery.
Mr. Thalman was born April 18, 1893 in Radcliffe, Iowa, to Dietrich andMary Himmel Thalman.
He was married to Eloise Cady in Iowa Falls, Iowa, on May 29, 1926.
Mr. Thalman was a teacher and administrator for nine years in public schools in Iowa. He received a Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY in 1929.
Mr. Thalman came to SIUC in 1929 as a member of the Dept. of Education.Later he joined the Dept. of Guidance, becoming head of the child guidance clinic in 1936. He held the position until he retired in 1961.
From 1940 to 1941, he was a collaborator at the University of Chicago'shuman development center.
Mr. Thalman was a member of the American Psychological Association, Sigma Zi, the Illinois Psychological Association, and Phi Delta Kappa, among others. He was a contributor to a number of professional publications.
Mr. Thalman was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Shirley Reno of Muncie, Ind., ason, Dr. Terry Thalman, a Carbondale dentist; and eight grandchildren.A son, Dr. W. C. Thalman, who was a dentist in Carbondale, died in 1971.
