AND DESCENDANTS Written by George A Jones, a direct descendant of John Jones Sr. John Jones, Sr. (1764-1860) and his brother, Thomas, came to the Blue Ridge section of Old Buncombe in 1790. Thomas purchased land on Little Hungry Creek on which they both established homes. John married Mary Jane Hicks and Thomas married Lucinda Hicks; sisters. Thomas later sold his property on Little Hungry Creek to John and moved to the Mud Creek section of Henderson County. Their father was Solomon Jones, an immigrant from Wales. Thomas had a number of children, the most famous being Solomon, the Road Builder. John Jones, Sr., purchased land on Little Hungry Creek, Clear Creek, Wolf Pen Branch, and Beaver Pond Branch of Green River. The earliest land patent in his deeds was made in 1776. The other surveys and land patents were made after 1790. At one time, he owned 1,055 acres. John, Sr. soon established himself as a businessman. As early as 1819, he entered into the private practice of lending money which had become a full-time business by 1830. His records indicate that many early families borrowed money from him. He managed his business until his 94th year and in 1858 employed his son, Captain Robert Jones and a son-in-law, Hiram King, to manage his finances. John Jones, Sr., and Mary Jane Hicks were the parents of eight children: 1. Susan (1787-1854) married William W. Kilpatrick. 2. Elizabeth (1790-1877) married Joseph Stepp. Many of Elizabeth's children moved to Arkansas and Oklahoma. Joseph and Elizabeth are buried in the Dana Methodist Cemetery. 3. Fannie (1793-1870) married James Stepp. They are buried in Red Hill Cemetery and many of their children also moved to Arkansas. 4. Robert (1794-1890) married Elizabeth McGuffie, the daughter of Edmond McGuffie and granddaughter of Abraham Kuykendall, pioneer settler in western North Carolina, soldier of the American Revolution, and the first owner of the Flat Rock section of North Carolina. 5. Nancy (1799-1856) married Hiram King, who is recognized as one of the leading citizens of Henderson County. Hiram and Nancy are buried at the King's Grove Graveyard. 6. John, Jr. (1803-1858) married Mary Maxwell. They are buried in the Edneyville Methodist Cemetery. 7. Thomas (1806-1888) married Rhoda Lyda. Thomas lived near his father and cared for him until his death. He purchased the Homeplace on which John, Sr., had established a cemetery, known-today as the Jones Cemetery in Sugar Loaf community. 8. Mary Ann (1813~ 1890) married the Reverend John Brown, a leader in the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. The Jones family were active Baptists. Mary Jane Hicks was older than her husband and died November 7, 1857, aged 98 years. She, along with her husband is buried in the Jones Cemetery in the Sugar Loaf community. John Jones, Sr., died in March, 1860, in his 96th year.
