Notizen zu dieser Person

Birth: Feb. 5, 1730, Germany Death: Apr. 28, 1818 Sabillasville Frederick County Maryland, USA "He came to America with his father, Yost Harbaugh. He moved to the Valley shortly after marriage, and settled on the land on which he lived and died in the upper end of the Valley. Jacob Harbaugh's lands were extensive Various parts of his farm were called Sweet Land, Peace the Best, Jacob's Last Chance, Sugar Tree Valley, Tired Dog, and Mount Olivet. He was tall and stout in person. He had one eye as the result of some malicious men, who fell foul of him at Mooney's Tavern, which it seems was a place of justice, and while he defended himself, one man struck him with a stone. He was a very strict disciplinarian. During winter evenings, he sat at a table and read, but not a whisper came from the family, each in his usual place. While eating, the children stood around the table. The food was plain and simple. They ate soup for breakfast, no meat, and fruits in season. They ate meat at noon. In the evening, soup and potatoes were served, no meat. Mush and milk was used often, and buttermilk was the drink, except on the Sabbath, when they had coffee." He married Anna Margaret Schmidt on April 1, 1761. They had 15 children between 1762 and 1782. (Per Harbaugh History, publish 1947 (page 199) He also purchased the farm of Valentine Shockey, near present day Rouzerville in Washingtown Township, Franklin County, PA, and later conveyed the same to his son George.
