Notes for JOHN BUFORD BROWN: LINCOLN AND FRANCES BROWN FAMILY HISTORY -- MARY FLORENCE DAMERON "Sampson Family" pg. 25 " Buford and Cecil helped with faming, broke young horses and helped with chores." pg. 26 "We had very few doctor bills. When the ax fell and nearly cut off Buford's toe, Mama wrapped it up and it grew back." pg. 36-37 BUFORD BROWN FAMILY HISTORY Buford grew up in the Hickory Grove Community five miles south of Leeton Mo., along with seven sisters and one brother. He broke young horses and helped with farming. In July 1918 he went into the service doing his training at Camp Funston, Kansas until the war was over. In 1919 he married Edna Willard, they rented a farm south of Leeton where their first three sons were born. They kept busy in the Methodist Church where he was Sunday School Superintendent for several years, also taught a class. Edna played the organ. In 1926, they surmised the grass must be greener in California, so they bought a Model T Ford Truck, built a box or house on it which was 7x10 feet behind the cab and having a top. They, with their three little sons, together with his sister, Zella, her husband, Gilbert Wilson and their son, Ellis struck out for California, a trip which took a month, stopping in Okla. and Calif. to visit relatives. They took the southern route as it was wintertime. They drove over the old plank road across the desert and reached California from Yuma, Ariz. Buford had changed some parts to rev up the motor and give him more speed on some long hills, but on hills the motor would not hold the truck in high gear, and with speed up, the gear would not go in mesh. Between Demming and Lordsburg the truck turned over, with women, children and the dog in a scramble in the back, a wheel broken, also. They also burned out brakes on some hills and were forced to run the wheel into the curb to get the truck stopped. The fourth son was born in Calif., but after trying Calif. for about a year and a half, Buford's family traveled northward, stopping in Longview, Wash., where Buford worked in a lumber mill. They took the house off the truck and lived in that along with a double garage. Buford took the truck to work. Eventually they built a five room house and Buford was Scout Master for two years. The children were plagued with pneumonia, so after four and a half years, they traded their new house for sixty-three acres and a four room house near Gervais, Oregon and moved again. They built a house and a dairy. In 1950, they went into dairying on a larger scale and with their son, Orville, milking as many as 60 cows at times. Buford and Edna bought a house in Gervais and Orville and Evelyn lived on the farm. Buford continued helping on the farm. In 1961 Edna was killed in a car-train accident and Buford spent 12 lonely years batching. In Jan., 1976, he married a nice little widow, Millie Bumgarner Horning. They live in the Senior Estates in Woodburn, Ore, where they keep busy with gardening, canning, delivering meals on wheels, their church. Millie plays in the Senior Citizen's Band and does alterations for customers. Millie also does sewing and fancy work. They belong to the Presbyterian Church in Woodburn. Buford has four sons, several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Millie has five children and several grandchildren. Transcription of a letter addressed to A. L. Brown. The letter was written Dec. 28, 1918 while Buford was stationed at Camp Funston, Kansas. Dec. 28th 1918 "Dear Ones, I will try and write you all a few lines this evening to let you know that I am as fine as ever and hope that this will find you all the same. But if they don't take care of themselves they will be sick. Well, I got both of your letters last night and one from Lizzie but the last letter than I got from E. was wrote Sunday so you see I have been some what lonesome for lack of mail. I had just finished your box you sent this morning when I got one from Lizzie and it sure was nice. We have not been doing any thing so I have been putting in the most of my time reading. I am reading Freckles now. I just got through reading "Our Bessie" but I (?) have any thing to do but go to bed and it was a little late when I got back the bugle horn (?) ___ for the lights to go out but they have not done it yet but when I come up the steps one of the boys hollow lights out but as it happened they did not do it just then. When I got to my bunk the blankets con___ raising up and I thought well there was someone in it but when it stuck its head out it was a white dog that the boys had put in there and covered up and tied to the bunk thinking maby I would not get in till after the lights went out. I took the dog and drug him all over the fellow that said lights out. A fellow learns here he can expect any thing when he gets back but it is very seldom that one will get mad and if they do they are almost run out of camp one thing sure there is not one of the boys that will tell on the other one so you can't find out any thing. They turned over the top Sargints bunk the other night but he could not find out who it was but he got mighty hot. I must close. With love from your ?Bad? Buford" [transcribed as best I could. The word above looked like "bad", but it's possible it could have been "Boy".
