[Jack Tatum's Family Tree PURE.FTW] Absolem Tatom \ Tatum served as Sergeant in North Carolina Militia in 1763. During the American Revolution, he served in the 1st North Carolian Regiment as a 1st Lt 1 Sep 1775, Capt. 29 Jun 1776, and resigned 19 Sep 1776 to assist in forming the new State government of North Carolina to replace colonial government. He was a prominent attorney and very active in both State and National politics and government. He served in State government as Assistant Quartermaster, keeper of the arsenal at Hillsborugh, private secretary to the Governor, and State Tobacco Agent. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1788, was elected to the Fourth Continental Congress, and served from 4 Mar 1795 to 1 Jun 1796 He was Member of the North Carolina House of Commons from Orange Co, 1797-1802.He was one of three commissioners appointed by the Congress to servey and award bonus lands in TN, to North Carolina veterans of the Revolutionary War. According to Worth S. Ray's Tennessee Cousins, other Commission members were Isaac Shelby, who later was first Governor of Kentucky, and Anthony Bledsoe. According to Ray: " The BLEDSOES " were from Prince George and Burnswick Counties in Virginia. and " The TATUM " were from SPOTTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Virginia, The three Commissioners, their surveyors, and the servey party guards were awarded bonus lands in Tennessee for their work. Not surprisingly, they got some of the best land. Absolem Tatom's bonus land was located a few miles west and southwest of Murfreesboro. His brothers Barnett and William were awarded many thousands of acres as survey party guards . Many other Tatoms were awarded bonus lands for service in the North Carolinia Militia in the Revolution.
