[Bill's Nutt.FTW] Damon Haris Nutt changed his name to Robert Harris Damon on August 22, 1952. He was ordained a deacon at First Baptist Church of Amarillo, TX Jan 15, 1961 and is Deacon Emeritus. He is a 32 degree Mason, member of Amarillo Lodge No. 731 and member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Lubbock, TX. He served as president of Plains Bell Federal Credit Union board of directors and president of Amarillo Area Chapter of Credit Unions. Damon began his career with Western Union in Lubbock, TX as a messenger boy in 1922 at age 14. In January, 1927, he transferred to Amarillo as a "Counter Clerk" still with Western Union Telegraph Company. He was later promoted to manager of the Fisk Building branch office, then Delivery Manager and lastly Night Manager at the main office. After being robbed one night, he resigned on Oct. 31, 1942 and three days later on Nov. 3, 1942 went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone as a coin collector, collecting coins from pay phones. He retired from this company on January 1, 1974 as a Special Representative (highest occupational title in Markenting Dept.) with 31 years of service. While he was with the telephone company, he was president of CWA Local 12128, Amarillo, member of JAYCEES (Junior Chamber of Commerce). Damon's father was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge when he was born, and their lodge work is based on the story in secular history of the friendship between Damon and Pythias, a Greek legend of friendship, and that is where Damon got his name. Damon and Christine were married on the air. Buchannan Street Baptist Church, of which they were members, broadcast its worship services on the radio from the studio of KGRS, located on the mezzanine of the Herring Hotel at 3rd & Pierce Street at 8:00 a.m. every Sunday morning. Christine played the piano and a group of young people sang. The pastor, Rev. J. C. Sizemore, had the devotional. They decided to have their ceremony performed during this service and broadcast over the radio. Rev. Sizemore announced that Christine Weatherall would no longer be playing the piano for these radio services, (at which point her mother broke into tears), but that Mrs. Damon Nutt would be the pianist. Damon has written his memoirs, but it is unpublished.
