Gladys F. Freesemann, 93, of Savannah, GA, formerly of Watertown, passed away peacefully in Savannah, Georgia on August 29, 2018.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 10, 2018 at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with Pastor John Carter officiating. Rachel Wendler will be the soloist accompanied by Carol Janke.
Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Wight and Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown.
Pallbearers will be David Shenk, Duane Selchert, David Selchert, Steven Selchert, Billy Petershagen, David Schultz and Dan Schultz.
Gladys was born on January 14, 1925 to George and Johanna (Wellnitz) Petershagen in Fargo, North Dakota. She and her family moved almost immediately to Watertown, South Dakota where she lived for the next 90 years. She moved to Savannah, Georgia in 2015 to be closer to family.
Gladys married Alvin "Al" Freesemann on June 3, 1947. They enjoyed a loving 54-year marriage until his death in 2001. She worked for a time at Balsinger’s Bakery on East Kemp Avenue in Watertown and long before the days of the TSA, she handled security at the Watertown Airport.
She was a life-long member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church and a member of the St. Martin’s Ladies’ Aid and the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary.
She was an avid letter writer, sending cards and letters for every occasion. She loved to bowl and was an excellent cribbage and pinochle player. Most of all she was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend.
Gladys will be greatly missed. Gladys is survived by her two children, JoAnn Peterson and Todd (Penny) Freesemann; three grandchildren, Kristi (Shannon) Hofer, Annie (David) Marrs and Katherine Freesemann; four great-grandchildren, Kayla Hofer, Jenna Hofer, Colton Marrs and Sadie Marrs; many nieces and nephews; many dear Watertown friends; and the loving residents and caregivers at Maple Place in Watertown and the Station Exchange in Richmond Hill, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Johanna; her husband Al; her sister Anna; and her brothers, Harry, Paul, George and Albert.
