Notizen zu dieser Person
At six years, Dorothea entered school, and since there was none at Siddernhausen, the children went to Dohnsen (about 100 inhabitants) about a mile distant. Many times in winter the snow would be too deep for walking, so one of the farmers would bring a wagon and team through thevillage to pick up all school children and take them to school.
When Dorothea was nine or ten the family moved to Dohnsen. This move was made because the house her father rented from a "bauer" (Herr Ollhoff) was to be torn down. It was to this spot that the family cat would return from Dohnsen, andsit where the house had stood.
At Dohnsen the family rented part of a house from Herr Ahrens. Dorothea continuedschool until she was about 12, when she moved to Everson to take care of a small child for a family. (The father in this family is the man about whom the story is told of his having eaten a dinner while on a trip with friends, enjoying the meal immensely, and promptly losing it all when told he had eaten young goat meat.)
