The 1850 Census showed August and Anna living in The Town of Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. The name was spelled Hone and Anna was Hannah. The 1860 Deerfield Census says he and his wife were born in Hannover, Germany and name was spelled Hann. The 1870 Utica Census spelled his name Auguste Hahn and said he was born in Prussia. Augustus served in Company F of the 146th NY Infantry Volunteers in the Civil War . Taken from cemetery notes Oneida Co. Historical Society. The 1869 County directory states Augustus Hahn was a stone mason. Taken from the 146th NY Infantry Book - Augustus Hahn, age 36 years. Enlisted August 29, 1862 at Deerfield to serve 3 years under the command of Capt. Peter Claesgens. Mustered in as a private Co. F. Oct. 10, 1862. Captured in action 5/5/l864 at the Wilderness, VA. He spent ten months in Andersonville Prison in the state of Georgia. At the end of the war he was paroled. He was released May 1, 1865; mustered out with company July 16, 1865 near Washington, D.C. His personal description was five feet five and a half inches tall, dark complexion and dark hair, eyes brown. He had been wounded while in the service of his country and for some years received a pension. He died 8/4/1908 in Utica, NY. According to a story from the New York State Military Museum and Veteran's Research Center, Augustus Hahn was a private in Company F of the 146th Regiment. The article states that as a member of that unit, Hahn participated in the battles of Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, and the more famous Battle of Gettysburg. During the Battle of the Wilderness, on May 5, 1864, Hahn was captured along with approximately 224 of his fellow soldiers. He may have been wounded during the battle (not confirmed by the article mentioned), and he spent about 10 months in Confederate prisons, first in Lynchburg, then at the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He was released sometime around March 1865, mustered out of the Army and returned home. http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/reghist/civil/infantry/146thInf/146thInfMain.htm Returning from the war he settled in Deerfield and lived there until 1884 at which time he moved to Mohawk Street in Utica. He learned the trade of plasterer in Germany and went into the German military service. In 1848 he escaped from Germany and came to America settling in Utica. He worked at his trade here and also as a stone mason. He worked for himself most of the time. He was a member of the German Rifle Co., Post John F. McQuade, G.A.R. In 1883 August sold property to George Bowman and his wife in the amount of $450. The property was listed on Hamilton Street, Utica, NY (40' frontage and 100' deep.) Obituary said he came to America in 1848. The naturalization record I found on Augustus Hahn showed a Declaration of Intent on Oct 1, 1852 with the Naturalization being Oct 25, 1854. Augustus died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Eisenhuth in Deerfield, NY. His death certificate said he died of old age with general breaking down. 1824, #2 Justus, des Weisbinders Jacob Hahn & ux. Anna Catharina geb. Sippel, Sohn, geb. d. 15ten des Januars, und getauft den 24ten desselben. Gev. der Schlachter Justus Hahn von Stolzhausen. Justus, son of the cooper Jacob Hahn and his wife Anna Catharina née Sippel, born on the 15th of January and baptized on the 24nd of the same month. Godfather was the butcher Justus Hahn from Stolzhausen.
