Hazel E. Wooding, 103, of Oriskany, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 20, 2015, at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on August 6, 1912 in Whitesboro, a daughter of the late William and Eva (Smith) Humphrey. She was educated in Oriskany Schools. On August 20, 1929, in Oriskany, she was united in marriage to Howard F. Wooding. In her early years, she was employed with the Waterbury Felt Mill in Oriskany, Trinkaus Manor, the Oneida County Airport Cafeteria, and the Oneida County Board of Elections for many years, and later at Utica Mutual Insurance Co., where she retired. Mrs. Wooding was a life long member of the Waterbury Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, (a Golden member at Oriskany-Westmoreland Chapter). She was also a member of the China Painters in Rome, NY, and a longtime member of the Whitestown Senior Center. She was an avid knitter, making everything from afghans and sweaters for each grandchild, to her famous dishcloths, for family and friends. In her later years, she discovered a gift for painting on porcelain and china, and created countless lovely pieces. She is survived by her three daughters, June Austin Sperlik, Karen (Sike) Mesick, and Sharon Krol-Wolanin (William). Hazel also leaves her grandsons and their spouses, Scott and Joanne Austin, Granite Falls, NC, Dane and Kathleen Austin, of New York, NY, Eric and Joann Austin, of Manlius, NY, and grandson, Jeffrey Krol, of Raleigh, NC; also her granddaughters and their spouses, Sharon and Timothy Raleigh, of Dunbarton, NH, Christina and Michael Schmitt, of Mt. Vision, NY, Sandra and Merfin Ramic, of Clinton, NY, and Jessica (Krol) Thomas, of Clark Mills, NY. She also leaves 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Wooding in 1977; sisters, Helen Martin, Mary Leuenberger; brother, Henry Humphrey; and sons-in-law, Gene Austin and Charles Sperlik. The family would like to thank the staff of the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, and also, Pastor John Currie and Pastor Roger Williams for their many years of spiritual guidance. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the Waterbury Memorial Presbyterian Church, 117 Utica St., in Oriskany, with Lay Pastor Roger Williams and the Rev. John Currie, officiating. Interment will be private in the Oriskany Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, Forty Main St., Whitesboro. In lieu of flowers, friends may consider donations to the Waterbury Memorial Presbyterian Church or the Eastern Star Home.
