William J. Knittel UTICA William J. Knittel, 89, of Utica, died peacefully January 11, 2015, at the Katherine Luther Rehab Center in Clinton. He was born April 1, 1925, in Utica, the son of William J. and Lillian (Eisenhuth) Knittel. Bill received his education in Utica public schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He was stationed in the South Pacific as a PT boat crew member and received his honorable discharge in 1946. Bill was employed in the Maintenance Department at the former Griffiss AFB from the time of his discharge until he retired in 1980. He was united in marriage with Ruth Yauch on October 5, 1957, at St. Peter's Church in Utica. Mr. Knittel was an avid downhill skier who spent countless days at Snow Ridge in Turin. Highlights of his skiing experiences included skiing Tuckerman Ravine, NH, and a 70th birthday trip to Telluride, CO. Bill's idea of perfection was a good day skiing and a cold beer afterward. He also enjoyed cross-country skiing, hiking, bicycling and jogging as family activities. Bill was an accomplished carpenter and handyman; he and Ruth built the house in which the family lived. He was a proud member of PT Boats, Inc., an organization established by veterans of WW II PT service to preserve the history of Patrol Torpedo Boats and the men who manned them. In addition to Ruth, his wife of 57 years, he is survived by a daughter, Sharon Farr and her husband, Eric Cruise, of Poland; cousins, Sandy and Tom Carvotta; several members of the Creedon family; and many friends, especially his buddies that he looked forward to seeing every Tuesday for their "meetings" at Teddies in Marcy. Bill's family would like to acknowledge the exceptional and compassionate care given by the entire staff at Katherine Luther Rehab Center - Gordon Wing to both Bill and Ruth over the years. In accordance with Bill's wishes, there will be no services or calling hours. Friends are asked to consider a donation in Bill's memory to PT Boats, Inc., POB 38070, Germantown, TN 38183.
