Robert graduated from New Hartford High School and the American Institute of Banking. He was secretary and director of the Sturges Manufacturing Co., having been associated with the company for 30 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of New Hartford, a 50-year member of Amicable Lodge, F & Am, a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Mohawk Valley Consistory, Ziyara Temple of Utica, Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce, Utica Kiwanis, Yahnundahsis Golf Club, Credit Bureau of Utica and the National Association of Accountants. For 16 years he was supervisor of the Town of New Hartford and he had served on the first Airport Committee.
