Birth allegiance - Prussia, Germany. Simon emmigrated from Antwerp, Belgium in the spring of 1853 along with John and Elizabeth (brother and sister-in-law to Simon). The vessel they took was at sea 59 days. While they were on this trip, they lost their first son, John, and he was buried at sea. They settled in West Leyden, then called Prussian Settlement and built a log cabin. Three months later another brother, Jacob came over. In the fall of 1854, the rest of Simon's family including his mother and father, brothers Anthony, and Peter and his sister Elizabeth and her husband, John Pelzer, and their two children. This ship was at sea for 90 days. During the trip, the mast of the ship was nearly washed away. This group of people promised themselves, and their god, that if they were ever safely joined to their loved ones in America, they would show their gratitude by building a church in their new homeland. True to their promise, in 1861, 7 years after arriving, "using stones from the fields" and land donated by the Urz Brothers, they completed the Prussian Settlement Church. While living in Lewis County, New York, Simon's occupation was farming. Simon had lived in Chadwicks for 17 years with his wife and family. Perhaps he moved to Chadwick to work in the mill. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Utica.
