It gets even more interesting when I remembered where I had hear that Schmalz name. I had contacted a Dr. Eric Schmalz from the Uof OK. He is alsothe editor of the Heritage Review. He had written the following to me way back in Dec 2011....
Dear Paula, Yes, my great-grandfather Johann Schmalz (1879-1951) was the son of Rosina (Fischer) Schmalz, who was born around 1849 in Selz and likely lived out her years in Kandel. I do not have much information on her, except that she was remarried after her first husband (Johann Schmaltz,born around 1849) died in 1887, when my great-grandfather was only 8 years old. She remarried apparently a wealthy man by the surname of Heintz, and by one account, this stepdad did not get along withthe youngest Schmalz children, Johann and Anges, who both left for the States in their late teens in October-November 1898. The 1852 census for Kandel might provide some additional insights on the families, but I do not have it right here with me now. I am not certain who Rosina?s siblings were, as there are a couple of branches of Fischer?s in Selz by the 1850s, though I can say they are all most likely related to the original settlers from Speyer.
