Mr. and Mrs. George Ackermann

Included among the early arrivals of pioneers in the present vicinity of Wishek was George Ackermann. Mr. Ackermann was born in Rohrbach, South Russia, on February 1, 1862. His parents were Frederich and Elizabeth (Holtzworth) Ackermann. In 1883 he was married toElizabeth Zoller in Rohrbach, South Russia.

Ten children blessed this union. They are Mrs. Elizabeth Ackermann-Klein, (Jacob), Wishek, ND; Mrs. Katherine Ackermann-Hochhalter, (Adolph), Ashland, Wisconsin; Mrs. Barbara Ackermann-Sayler, (William), Wishek, ND; Mrs. Christine Ackerman-Klein (Fred), Fairfield, CA.; Fred Ackerman, Wishek, ND.; Edward Ackerman, Wishek, ND.; Mrs. Martha Ackermann-Sayler (Fred Jr.), Wishek, ND.; Mrs. Minnie Ackermann-Gall, (Fred), Blanchard, ND.

In the spring of 1889 the George Ackermann family accompanied by the Johannas Ackermann family and Israel Hildenbrand family arrived in this country.

Their first stop was at the Wiest home. They remained there for several days. From there they journeyed to their respective homesteads.

The George Ackermann homestead, which was built of sod, was located five miles north northwest of Wishek. Of course at that time there were no building materials to be bought, so nearly everythinghad to be made by hand.

The Ackermanns had their share of toil and hardships. Along with their neighbors their courage and industry triumphed and they achieved a modest fortune and were thusassured of a comparatively carefree old age.

They later moved from their farm to Wishek. Here they lived the last few years in retirement. Mr. Ackermann died on May 16, 1936. His wife died four years later on June 14, 1940, in Wishek, ND.

When George and Johann Ackermann and Israel Hildenbrand families arrived in Logan County, Johannesdale Township, North Dakota, USA., the three families, out of fear of Indian attacks, picked quarter sections of land close to each other in 80 rods wide and 160 rods long so each family built their house one quarter mile apart so they could help each other if these Indian attacks wouldoccur. There was a creek running through all of their homesteads. Water is very necessary for survival.

In 1898 the Soo Line Railroad was built and ran through the Homestead from North to South. Trains ran between Wishek, Burnstad and Napoleon, ND. parallel to the creek that also runs through the farm land North to South.
