Mrs. Catherine Ann Nelson, 69, Box 229, Altoona RD 4, formerly of 2805 Elm St. and 1728 20th Ave., Altoona, died Thursday night, June 13, 2002, at Altoona Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 5,1932, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Harry L. and Rosella J. (Breinig) Gerstbrein. She married Charles J. Nelson July 28, 1952, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cumberland, Md. He died Feb. 9,1990. Mrs. Nelson was a member of Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, where she was a member and past treasurer of the Cathedral Christian Mothers, past Brownie leader at Cathedral and past president of the Mother Seton Guild. She retired in 1992 as a salesperson in women’s fashions from Meyer Jonasson, Altoona, with 19 years of service. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the National Kidney Foundation. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, reading, knitting, crafts and was a rosary maker. Surviving are three sons: Paul Joseph Nelson of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Charles Joseph Nelson Jr. of Sicklerville, N.J.; and Edward Joseph Nelson of Houston, Texas; three daughters: Rosemarie Gibson of Altoona, Jane Ann Bassetti of Medina, Ohio, and Lori Ann Raugh of Manheim. Pa.; two sisters: Rose Marie Fochler and .loan L. Weston, both of Altoona; a brother, Thomas A. Gerstbrein of New Berlin, Wis.; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son. Michael Joseph Nelson; and a brother, Dr. Harry L. Gerstbrein. A funeral Mass will be held at IO a.m. Monday, June 17,2002, at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Committal Rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held Sunday evening. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the National Kidney Foundation.
